Remnants of Beryl to affect Kentucky Tuesday

Featured Replies

On Tuesday, Tropical Storm Beryl's remnants are expected to affect the region and may result in a few isolated strong to severe storms. Even the strongest storms have the potential to produce brief tornadoes, destructive winds, and significant rainfall.

Beryl's precipitation may still affect us on Wednesday, while the strongest parts of it might linger to the north. Beryl's track is expected to have minor adjustments in the upcoming days.

Regarding the anticipated effects of Hurricane Beryl's remnants, not much has changed since Sunday morning. Before clearing out Wednesday night, waves of sporadic showers and storms will pass through the region on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

The region spanning southern Illinois and central Indiana is still predicted to get the highest rainfall, however, localized flooding problems could arise in areas where thunderstorms produce high rainfall rates.

Strong to severe storms are another possibility for Tuesday afternoon and into Tuesday evening. Strong storms are currently expected to occur primarily between 4 PM and 2 AM EDT on Tuesday and Tuesday night. The severity of the risks is still unknown and could vary depending on Tuesday afternoon's clearing and instability. The Storm Prediction Center warns that if there is a greater likelihood of more clearing tomorrow, then severe danger ratings may need to rise. Severe storms may cause brief spin-up tornadoes and localized pockets of damaging winds.

Probably over southern/central AR at the start of the day, the surface low connected to the remains of TC Beryl will travel northeastward during the day. By Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. EDT, this low is expected to be close to the OH and MS river junction, and by Wednesday morning, it should be in central Indiana. Right ahead of the surface low, the tropical airmass that is accompanying this system will deliver 70s dewpoints into the Lower/Middle OH Valley and the Mid-Mississippi Valley, which will contribute to destabilization and moderate buoyancy despite the widespread cloud cover.

Throughout the duration of this system and ahead of it, thunderstorms are predicted, especially in its northeastern quadrant, where convergence along the warm front will enhance lift. Strong updrafts will probably have a mostly multicellular storm mode and a transitory or brief duration, as is usual in tropical conditions. Any deeper updrafts may facilitate the brief genesis of tornadoes due to low-level shear. The warm front's ambient low-level vorticity may enhance the low-level shear, thus raising the risk of tornadoes very next to the front. The southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and western Kentucky regions along the Ohio River are expected to see the highest tornado hazard from 4 to 8 p.m. EDT. From 8 to 11 p.m. EDT, the threat is expected to shift further northeastward into more of southern Indiana and the Louisville area.
