16th Region Week 3 Review

Top Four A Perfect 10/10… Morgan's Hoskins Shoots The Lights Out… And Bath County Continues Its Downward Spiral...

It was a clean sweep for our top four, as Boyd County, Ashland, Morgan County, and Fleming County combined to go 10-0 for the week.

Boyd dealt another blow to any idea of parity within the 16th by demolishing Rowan County in the second half to win going away. They supplemented that performance with consecutive wins over West Virginians Capital and George Washington, the latter of which is one of the top teams in the mountain state. Senior post anchor Jason Ellis became Boyd's all-time leader in blocked shots against Capital.

Ashland matched its rival, winning all three of its games last week. The Tomcats put it on Pikeville by 25, with help from Zander Carter's 24 points before dispatching Fairview and Chapmanville (WV). Junior Tyson Lalonde has emerged as a reliable complimentary scorer behind Carter.

Morgan County shook off its loss to Boyd County by throttling Elliott County and Pike County Central by a combined 63 points. Preston Hoskins averaged 27.5 ppg while sinking 15 of 23 shots from behind the arc. The Cougars will be the envy of many this coming week, as they travel to the picturesque Great Smoky Mountains for the annual Christmas Classic in Gatlinburg.

Fleming County had a ”Jolly” good time at Russell's Marv Meredith Gymnasium. The Panthers extended their record to 7-0 as Lucas Jolly fell three rebounds shy of a triple-double (23pts/10 assists/7 rebs) to help propel the visiting Panthers past the Red Devils by a comfortable margin of 14. Their seven game run to start the season is the best Flemingsburg has witnessed since 2012-2013, when the Panthers won their first of back-to-back region titles.

Bath County was labeled as trending down last week, and yet managed to drop the temperature a few more degrees. Beating undefeated Fleming County was beyond their reach, but one win Menifee County wasn't far fetched. Bath kept it close, but ultimately came up short in search of win #1. If the thermometer is going to trend back in the other direction this week, winless Bracken County on Monday is the game to watch. One way or another, someone will get off the schneid in Brooksville.

Mild Upset Of The Week: It's known throughout the region that you don't sleep on Lewis County. The Lions have proven a tough out for anyone on a given night. They lost to a solid East Carter club by eleven on Dec. 5th, but traveled to Grayson a week later to avenge that loss behind a breakout performance from Drew Noble (25 pts/8 rebs). It's wise to pay zero attention to Lewis County's record, as there's seldom anything glamorous about it. It likely won't be again this season, but they'll be positioned for multiple wins come tournament time.

As you'll see, there's very little movement in the rankings again. It's Boyd, followed closely by Ashland, then a gap back to the tightly bunched trio of Fleming, Morgan, and Rowan. The 63rd District occupies the middle of the region, with little to no evidence to separate those four at this point.
