13th Region Week 2 Rankings and Review

Here is your 13th Region Top 10 Week 2. Trent Noah had a monster week, a few inter region games were played, and the back half of the top 10 are starting to shake themselves out. 

1. Harlan County (5-0).
Harlan Co has stayed perfect on the season and did so by winning the WYMT Mountain Classic. Trent Noah led the way through the tournament by scoring a tournament record 108 in the three games combined which set a record by fellow 13th region player Peyton Broughton. He paced the Black Bears with 54 in the semi final game against Martin County then led the way with 38 in the championship game. Harlan County takes on South Laurel on the road Tuesday and plays Desales this weekend. 

2. South Laurel  (3-0)
The Cardinals have started the season 3-0 with wins over crosstown rival North Laurel and Sayre in the Ted Cook Classic. Rawlings and Mabe combined for 38 in the win over Sayre. The Cardinals really look to make a splash at home against Harlan County on Tuesday. They finish up the week against Bardstown at Green County in the Carl Deaton Classic on Saturday. 

3. Corbin (0-0).
It feels weird to have a team that’s not played a game in the third spot but that’s the upside I think this Corbin team has. There should be no excuse of football players being basketball ready with the time they’ve taken before their first game. We will see what this Corbin team has on Wednesday as they take on Cordia at home then they will play Williamsburg at home on Friday. Corbin will be led by Carter Stewart, Trey Worley, Eli Pietrowski, and Zander Curry. 

4. Clay County (3-2).
Clay lost in their first round game of the WYMT Classic which deprived us of a Clay and Harlan County matchup, but turned around and won their next game against Harlan Ind. The only downfall of that win was they had beat them by 46 earlier in the year, but only won by 10 this time. Hayden Harris led the tigers in scoring in both of their games this week.Clay will take on OBI on the road Tuesday and Jackson County at home on Friday in two district showdowns. 

5. Bell County (4-0)
If you consider HC, SL, Corbin, and Clay your big four.. Then Bell is making a case for being the top of the next group. Bell is undefeated on the year and just wrapped the week up with a win over Knox Central by 12 in the Pride of the Mountains Basketball Showcase. Blake Burnett and Cameron Hall led the Bobcats in scoring in the win over KC. What Bell really lacks is a big win so far in their schedule but that time will eventually come. Bell will go to Lynn Camp on Tuesday and play Buckhorn at Perry County Central on Friday then Leslie at Perry on Saturday. 

6. Pineville (4-1)
Pineville is also quietly putting together a nice season. They had a nice week last week with a 47 point win over Red Bird and a 32 point win over Rye Cove. Sawyer Thompson is worth the price of admission if you find your way to a game that Pineville is playing in. Pineville only has one game this week on the schedule as they go to Whitley County on Friday.  

7. Whitley County (3-1)
Whitley finished the week strong with a 3 point win over Knox Central and a 21 point win over Garrard County in the Colonel Classic. They had 3 players score in double figures against Knox and 4 players in double figures against Garrard so the Colonels are playing unselfish basketball right now. Whitley will have a chance to climb the rankings this week with games against Middlesboro, Pineville, and Rye Cove. 

8. Knox Central (3-2).
Knox is by far the most improved team so far in the 13th. They’re a win away from their total last season, and were close to surpassing it this week but dropped two games to 13th region teams Whitley and Bell. Gavin Chadwell is having a solid year averaging 20 and 15 per game. Knox looks to get back in the win column with games at Model on Tuesday, and Paris at home on Friday. They will also make the trip to Perry County Central to play Lee County on Saturday. 

9. North Laurel (0-5).
Still winless but I believe teams under North Laurel would be winless too if they’ve played the schedule the Jags have.The Jags lost a heartbreaker last night to Henry Clay by 2. They look to get back in the win column this week with a home district game against OBI on Thursday. North is being led so far by Reece Davidson in points and rebounds. 

10. Jackson County (2-3).
The Generals don’t have much time to dwell on going 0-2 last week because they have a busy week ahead of them this week. Jackson plays Red Bird at home Monday, Owsley on the road Tuesday, Clay on the road Friday, then Wolfe County at Perry Central on Saturday. We should know more about the Generals this time next Sunday.
