BIRDS RUN INTO A BIGGER AND STRONGER LEX CATH TEAM

There is no sugar coating this game at all. Lex Cath looked incredible.  There was NO flaws in their game.  The Birds who were totally undersized were exposed big time by a team that looked like a team on a mission.  I had flashbacks on how good NDA looked last year on their way to absolutely slicing thru their Kentucky competition to a State Title last year.  I will be SHOCKED as long as Lex Cath can stay healthy for the next 3 games if anyone is going to even come close to knocking them off.

It didn't take long for Lex Cath to get on the board with a nice cross to their leading goal scorer #13 Mary Martin Hampton for a sweet finish to make it 1-0.

Later on it was #24 bullying her way up the middle of the box to put a finish for goal #2.

You thought MAYBE the Birds could regroup at half and make a miracle happen in the 2nd half if they could just keep the score 2-0.

Unfortunately, Lex Cath after a clear out of a corner had Izzy Skinner blast a shot back into the box which ricocheted off a Birds defender to make it 3-0 with less than a minute left in the half.  I felt like that probably did us in.  3-0 deficit against a caliber of a team like Lex Cath was just going to be to steep of a climb to happen.

The Birds came out in the 2nd half looking much more polished and relaxed.  I felt like our time of possession picked up and the opportunities towards goal definitely increased.  We had a really nice chance to power one in to get on the board after a corner kick.  If we only had VAR a ball "might" have broken the plane but the AR or Center Ref didn't give us the call and allowed Lex Cath to clear it out.

10 minutes into the 2nd half Lex Cath was able to get a corner where Nat tried to swat it out but instead it found the foot of UK commit (Region 11 POY) Katherine Truitt to blast it back into the net.  LC 4 Birds 0.

Then the final goal of the night was another set piece for LC with a corner kick that found Izzy Skinner to put the icing on the cake and make it what it ends up being LC 5 Birds 0.

It was a valiant run for the Birds.  A season to remember.  I must state I honestly thought the Birds were a year away from making another shot in the State Tournament with only having 1 Senior in the starting lineup, a Freshmen keeper and a backline comprising of 2 Fresh, 1 Soph & 1 Jr.  That backline/GK unit grew exponentially throughout the season and ended the season not looking as young as they were.  The experience that unit got this past season will be a HUGE benefit to the team the years to come.

Good luck to the Lady Knights of Lexington Catholic!

What a season for the Birds, super super proud of what you accomplished.
