South Oldham at North Oldham Predictions/Updates

Featured Replies

After two "false starts", they look to (finally!) get this game played on Monday.

WHO:   South Oldham (14-6) at North Oldham (9-12)

WHERE:  North Oldham HS, Goshen, KY

WHEN:  Monday, February 7    first game of a girl-boy doublheader  6 pm tip

BROADCAST:  Free live hi-def video coverage begins at 5:30 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com

TRIVIA:  South Oldham leads the series, 24-2

This should be a really interesting contest.    Both teams are 1-0 in district seeding play after South beat Oldham County, 55-35, and North manhandled the Lady Colonels, 63-22.

With the 29th district currently just composed of 3 teams, the winner of this game earns the #1 seed in the 29th district tournament.   Since that entails a "bye" to the district final, this also means the winner will be punching their ticket to the girls' 8th Region tournament.    curious fact:   North Oldham opened as a school in the 2003-4 season.    Since that time, the Lady Mustangs have never made it to the girls' 8th Region tournament.   Regardless of whether they win this game or not, North will be heavily favored to end that drought this season...

Both teams come into the game on a bit of an uptick.

South has won 5 in a row and 7 of their last 8, with the lone setback during that stretch a narrow 55-53 loss on the road to Spencer County.    South is playing well; this is a very cohesive team that plays well together on the court, and runs the transition game exceptionally well.   Senior Sierra Kemelgor has scored over 1,000 points and leads the team in scoring at 21.5 ppg and is tied for the team lead in rebounding at 7.5 rebounds.    Sophomore guard Ella Morrison - a three year starter - averages 15.2 ppg and also averages 7.5 rebounds.     8th grade sensation Maddie Young averages 10.8 ppg off the bench for the Lady Dragons.   Starting guard Chloe John just misses averaging double digit scoring at 9.2 ppg.

South, however, only owns one victory over a team with a winning record (Bullitt Central at 16-9), and head coach Gene Heffington would love to get a couple of higher-profile victories here in the final days of the regular season.    A win over district rival North Oldham and a win over North Bullitt (14-10, another upcoming foe) would help provide that momentum boost.

North Oldham (9-12) is starting to put things together under first-year coach Mac MaIntosh, winning four straight and five of their last six.   Their only loss in the last six games came at the hands of state power Franklin County by just 8 points.   North has played a pretty aggressive schedule this year, facing perennial powers CAL, Mercy, Bethlehem, Franklin County, Assumption, and others.   6'0" senior forward Riley Neal leads the way, both in scoring and on the glass, averaging 24.6 ppg and 8.6 boards.   Point guard Kylie Vize averages 8.2 ppg and her sister Katelyn Vize averages 8.0 rebounds a contest.  North is not particularly good beyond the arc, hitting just 27%, but watch for sophomore reserve guard Gracie Sipes, who just may be the best pure shooter on the team; Sipes - who's appeared in 16 games - has hit 14 threes at nearly 33%.

Of note of late....after struggling on the defensive end of the floor early in the year, the Lady Mustangs have held four of their last six opponents under 50 points, and two of those opponents - Seneca and Oldham County - scored just 20 and 22 points, respectively.    Credit an improved pressure defense.

Common Opponents

Oldham County:    South won 55-35      North won, 63-22

Louisville Holy Cross   South won 61-49      North won 57-41

If I can, I'll post updates from Goshen.  - CM

The game was postponed twice....it will now be held MONDAY 2/7/22 at 6 pm.

Pegasus Sports will go "on air" with free, live, hi-definition video at 5:30 pm ET.

South leads this series by a whopping margin:  24-2

This game will hardly be a cakewalk for South, though, as North comes into this game hot.    South will be favored, but not by much.

The victor earns the District 29 #1 seed and the automatic berth in the 8th Region tournament (since it's a 3-team district).

North Oldham is on a 4 game winning streak.....the Lady Mustangs are averaging 58.7 ppg, the second-highest in school history....North has never advanced to the 8th Region tournament (school opened in 2003) .... a win tonight puts North into the 8th Region tournament automatically as the #1 seed in a 3 team district.

South Oldham is the defending district champs....Gene Heffington's squad has one of the region's biggest "clutch" players at crunch time in Sierra Kemelgor, a talented senior who rebounds well, and shoots well from all levels.   Youngsters Ella Morrison (soph) and Maddie Young (8th grade) are two of the most talented underclassmen in the region.    South's transition game is an exceptional work of art.
