We are coming down the stretch with the 2021/22 basketball season. We are now starting to get into district play. Let's take a look back at week 6 inside the 14th region. Some teams got to play and some didn't due to the snow and cold weather.

 

1.) Perry County Central (13-2):

Commodores win only game they had: Perry County Central won their only game they had last week, defeating Leslie County with ease, on the road, 69-36. The win pushed the Commodores out to 3-0 in region and 2-0 in district play.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Letcher County Central, Thursday at Garrard County, Friday vs. Barbourville (Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic).

2) Breathitt County (14-2):

Bobcats add another trophy to collection,  win 14th Region All "A": This past week, the Breathitt County Bobcats added another trophy to their collection, 14th Region All "A" Classic. Breathitt County defeated district foe, Jackson City in the opening round to a COVID Cancellation. Up next, the Bobcats schedule would get a little tougher. Breathitt County would get past Cordia 104-91. That win would advance the Bobcats to the semi's, where they would take on the Leslie County Eagles. This would be a tremendous game as Breathitt County would edge out the Eagles, 75-64. Finally, Breathitt County would take on the Hazard Bulldogs to see who would go to the All "A" Classic State Tournament. In a hard fought game, Breathitt County was able to edge out Hazard in a thriller 64-58. 

Upcoming Schedule: Saturday vs. TBD Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic (at Perry County Central).

3) Hazard (10-4):

Bulldogs come up short in 14th Region All "A" Classic, snap 4 game win streak: Hazard was also a participate in the 14th Region All "A" Classic. They would make it to the championship game on Sunday against Breathitt County but they couldn't pull it out as they fell to Breathitt County 64-58. Hazard got to the championship game by defeating, Buckhorn 61-45, Lee County 87-67 and Wolfe County 60-52. 

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Lee County, Thursday at Wolfe County, Saturday vs. Floyd Central (at Perry County Central Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic).

4) Wolfe County (11-5):

Wolves see 7 game win streak snapped: Wolfe County seen their 7 game win streak come to an end on Saturday as they fell to Hazard 60-52 in the 14th Region All "A" Classic Semi-Finals. Wolfe County defeated both Owsley County 71-46 and Knott County Central 46-43 to make it to the semi-finals. Wolfe County had been red hot coming into the Hazard game but couldn't get past the Bulldogs. Wolves have another shot at Hazard on Thursday at the Wolves Den.

Upcoming Schedule: Wednesday vs. Powell County, Thursday vs. Hazard.

5) Knott County Central (3-8):

Patriots continue to struggle: With the 46-43 loss to Wolfe County on Wednesday in the 14th Region All "A" Classic, Knott County Central has now dropped 2 straight and have lost 4 of their last 5 games.

Upcoming Schedule: Thursday at Floyd Central, Friday vs. TBD (at Perry County Central Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic).

6) Cordia (4-6):

Lions drop 3 straight: Cordia didn't have a good start to the new year like they had hoped for as they have dropped all three games they've played. At Bell County 81-78, Breathitt County 104-91 (14th Region All "A" Classic) and Rockcastle County 98-84 (at South Laurel Raymond Reed Classic).

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday at Buckhorn, Thursday vs. Pike County Central, Saturday vs. Pineville (at Perry County Central Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic).

7) Estill County (6-6):

Engineers open new year with a win: Estill County opened the new year on the right foot with a big 63-59 road win at Leslie County on Tuesday. Estill County was led in scoring by JR Kade Benton with 40. Kade is the little brother of former Engineer, Joe Benton. Estill County was scheduled to take on Powell County at home on Friday in a boy girl double header but the game was rescheduled for January 31st due to snow.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Madison Southern, Friday at Lee County, Saturday vs. Letcher County Central.

8 ) Letcher County Central (4-5):

Letcher County Central had the week off: The Cougars were hit with COVID last week so they're game with Betsy Layne was canceled.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday at Perry County Central, Thursday at Leslie County, Saturday at Letcher County Central.

9) Buckhorn (5-9):

Buckhorn losing streak continues to grow: Buckhorn came into this past week on a 3 game losing streak, that number was extended by 1 to a 4 game losing streak with the 14th Region All "A" loss to Hazard 61-45.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday at Red Bird, Tuesday vs. Cordia, Thursday vs. Jackson City, Saturday vs. Jackson County (at Perry County Central Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic).

10) Lee County (7-6):

Bobcats drop opening round game in 14th Region All "A": Lee County dropped they're only game in the 14th Region All "A" Classic to Hazard 87-67. JR guard Zach Watterson continues to led Lee County. He's now averaging 22 points per game and has scored 280 points this season. With a lot of talent returning next season, next year's bobcat team could be special.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday at Hazard, Friday vs. Estill County, Saturday vs. Sayre (at Perry County Central Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic).

11) Powell County (4-8):

Pirates drop another game: Powell County continues to struggle as they have now dropped another game, losing 81-64 to Bath County. That's a second straight loss and 5 of they're last 6 games.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Jackson County, Wednesday at Wolfe County, Friday vs. Owsley County, Saturday at Williamsburg.

12) Leslie County (2-11):

Eagles continue to struggle: Leslie County dropped all three games last week, losing 69-36 Perry County Central, 63-59 Estill County and 75-64 Breathitt County. With those three losses, that extended they're losing streak to 5 games. 

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday at Clay County, Thursday vs. Letcher County Central, Saturday vs. Paintsville (at Perry County Central Big Lou Coaches vs. Cancer Classic).

13) Jackson City (2-9):

Jackson City hit with COVID: The Tigers were scheduled to participate in the 14th Region All "A" Classic last week but had to forfeit they're opening round game against Breathitt County due to COVID.

Upcoming Schedule: Thursday at Buckhorn.

14) Owsley County (2-8):

Owls have now lost 7 straight: Owsley County continued to struggle last week, dropping they're game with Wolfe County 71-46 in the 14th Region All "A" Classic. That would be they're 7th straight loss. Can the Owls get back on track with district play coming up?

Upcoming Schedule: Friday at Powell County, Saturday vs. Middlesboro.
