BluegrassPreps.com 14th Region Week 3 Review

Featured Replies

We are Three weeks in the basketball season and it's been a wild one so far. Let's take a look back at week 3 inside the 14th region and see what changes have been made.

1) Perry County Central (7-1):

Napier starting to lead the Commodores: Estill County transfer, Landon Napier, is starting to take over for the Commodores. Landon  is now averaging 17 ppg and that is due to a big boost in their last two games. He scored 31 in their route of crosstown rival, Hazard 80-53. He added 24 the very next night in their win over Harlan Independent 68-59 in the DJ Begley Classic at Hazard.

Upcoming Schedule: 12/20 vs. Wayne County, 12/21 at McCreary Central, 12/22 vs. Taylor County, 12/23 vs. Barbourville - All games at McCreary Central Arby's/KFC Classic.

2) Breathitt County (6-2):

Bobcats bouncing back: The Bobcats came into last week on a 2 game losing streak but they would end that streak and start a new one, this one would be a three game win streak as they won all three games last week defeating; Knott County Central 56-43, Wolfe County 68-65, Owsley County 92-48.

Upcoming Schedule: N/A

3) Hazard (4-2):

The Bulldogs go 2-1 this past week: Hazard went 2-1 this past week with wins over Buckhorn 85-54 and Powell County 72-54. Their lone loss of the week was a pretty bad one as they got crushed by crosstown rival, Perry County Central 80-53.

Upcoming Schedule: 12/20-22 at Smokey Mountain Christmas Classic.

4) Knott County Central (2-6):

Patriots struggling, it's early: You never see the Patriots of Knott County Central struggle, especially under BB King, but this year the Patriots are struggling having only won 2 games so far. The Patriots are 1-2 against 14th region teams so far this season. One thing is for sure, the defending 14th region champions better start getting their stuff together or it could be a long season in Hindman.

Upcoming Schedule: 12/20-??? at Pikeville Invitational Tournament.

5) Cordia (3-3):

Lions go 1-2; Cordia went 1-2 last week, with the lone win coming against Middlesboro 82-65 in the DJ Begley Classic at Hazard. Cordia's two losses would come at the hands of Pikeville 81-65 and Knott County Central 54-51 in a big district showdown.

Upcoming Schedule; Jenkins Cavalier Christmas Classic

6) Wolfe County (4-3):

Wolves finding their grove: It's early but Wolfe County is starting to find their grove and find it early. Wolfe County is coming off two big wins last week, getting revenge on Paintsville 65-63 from an earlier loss in the season and crushing Jackson City 67-35. Wolfe County and Breathitt County would go to war in the Coliseum but in the end, it would be the Bobcats of Breathitt County pulling out the thrilling 68-65 win.

Upcoming Schedule; 12/20 vs. East Jessamine, 12/21 at Sayre, 12/22 vs. Bluegrass United Lex KY Home School - All Games at Sayre Jim Lankster Classic.

7) Letcher County Central (2-4):

Cougars starting to slip; After their big season opening win over Knott County Central to open the season, the Cougars have gone 1-4 since, including a current three game losing streak. They fell to both Magoffin County 66-63 and Thomas Nelson 71-58. Can they get things turned around?

Upcoming Schedule: 12/21-23 at Lee Jones VA, Battle of the Borders

8 ) Estill County (3-3):

Engineers coming and going: The Engineers have the scorers and defense but they can't catch a win streak. They've won, lost, won, lost all season long thus far. The Engineers lost 2/3 last week, falling to Woodford County 72-55 in what was actually a good game until Woodford pulled away in the second half. Estill county would bounce back and route district foe, Lee County 75-59. Estill at one point was up 40. Estill County would fall to the Rowan County Vikings on Saturday 59-45 in the Stock Yards & Trust Bank Challenge.

Upcoming Schedule: 12/21 at Owsley County (District Game), 12/22 at Floyd Central.

9) Powell County (3-4):

Pirates playing better than expected; After having the season they had last year, no one expected the Pirates to be playing good basketball this season. The Pirates have won 3 games which matches last year's win total and they have defeated Owsley County, a team that the Pirates fell to last season. Can the Pirates keep up the good work or is it all just an illusion?

Upcoming Schedule: 12/20 at Lee County (District Game).

10) Buckhorn (4-6):

Buckhorn losses three straight: Buckhorn has dropped three straight after having a 3 game win streak. Losses have came to Hazard 85-54, Shelby Valley 87-65 and Fleming County 80-51.

Upcoming Schedule; 12/21 vs. Morgan County

11) Leslie County (1-5):

Eagles finally pick up win #1; The Eagles edged out Floyd Central 85-76 to claim win #1 on the season.

Upcoming Schedule: Arby's/KFC Classic 12/20-???

12) Lee County (4-4):

Bobcats playing well: The Bobcats are playing some decent ball as of late, winning two out of three. Defeating Model 74-60 and Owsley County 70-56. Their loss came to Estill County 75-59.

Upcoming Schedule: 12/21 vs. Elliott County, 12/21 vs. Shelby Valley - Both at Jenkins Cavalier Christmas Classic.

13) Jackson City (2-4):

Jackson City finally gets a win: Jackson City has snapped their four game losing streak and countered it with a current two game win streak as they have picked up wins over both Owsley County 57-47 and LIGHT Danville KY Home School 73-57.

Upcoming Schedule: 12/20 at Williamsburg

14) Owsley County (3-6):

Owls are struggling; Owsley County has dropped 5 straight, all by double digits and blowouts. Can they re-group?

Upcoming Schedule: 12/21 vs. Estill County (District Game)
