Two weeks in and still going strong. It's been an exciting season thus far. We've had some nail bitters and we've had some that was over before halftime. Let's take a look back at week 2 in the 14th Region.

 

1) Breathitt County (3-2):

Bobcats drop two out of three: Breathitt County dropped two out of three games this past week, falling to both Knox Central 65-57 in overtime and Harlan Independent 76-70. Breathitt County was able to pick up one win earlier in the week as they edged out Johnson Central 52-47. All three games were in the WYMT Mountain Classic at Perry County Central.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday at Knott County Central, Friday vs. Wolfe County, Saturday vs. Owsley County (Peggy Moore Classic).

 

2) Perry County Central (4-1):

Commodores are WYMT Mountain Classic Champions: After falling hard to Harlan County to open up the season, the Commodores have won 4 straight and are catching fire. They won the 2021 WYMT Mountain Classic that was held at Morton Combs Athletic Complex on the campus of Knott County Central.  They defeated Knox Central 72-52 in the championship game, they didn't really have any issues out of the Panthers. The Commodores had to defeat Paintsville 64-47 and Harlan Independent 55-54 in order to make it to the championship game. Estill County transfer, Landon Napier was named WYMT Mountain Classic MVP.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Pike County Central, Thursday vs. Hazard (District Game), Saturday vs. Harlan Independent (at Hazard DJ Begley Classic)

 

3) Hazard (3-1):

Bulldogs go .500 on the week at 1-1: Hazard split their two games they had this week, defeating district foe, Leslie County with ease, 72-48. Hazard would fall to Whitley County 75-71 on the road. The Bulldogs were suppose to be in action today at Cordia but that game was canceled. 

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Buckhorn (District Game), Thursday at Perry County Central (District Game), Saturday vs. Powell County.

 

4) Knott County Central (1-3):

Knott County Central is falling on hard times: The Patriots have lost 3 of their first 4 games of the season, falling on hard times but the good news is, the season is just starting. The Patriots dropped two of their three losses this past week, on their own home court, falling to both Harlan Independent 43-39 and Paintsville 73-51. Both losses were in the WYMT Mountain Classic.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Breathitt County, Thursday vs. Cordia (District Game), Saturday vs. TBA (Hazard DJ Begley Classic).

 

5) Cordia (2-1):

Lions go 1-0 this week: In their lone game of the week, which just happened to be a big district game, the Cordia Lions were hold off a fighting Cougars bunch, 76-72. Just a reminder, this is the same Letcher County Central team that just beat Knott County Central.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday at Pikeville,  Thursday at Knott County Central (District Game), Saturday vs. Middlesboro (at Hazard DJ Begley Classic)

 

6) Letcher County Central (2-2):

Cougars go 1-1 this week and remain at .500 for the season: Letcher County Central split their two games this week, defeating Prestonsburg 60-41 but dropping a big district game to Cordia 76-72. The Cougars were scheduled to play Pike County Central today but that game was canceled. 

Upcoming Schedule: Thursday at Magoffin County.

 

7) Wolfe County (2-2):

Wolves are back at .500 for the season after picking up two wins this week: Wolfe County are back to .500 on the season after picking up two wins this week to counter their two blowout losses to open the season. The Wolves picked up wins over Powell County 66-52  on the road and then thrashed Estill County 80-51 at home. 

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Paintsville (Paintsville defeated Wolfe County by 30 to open the season at Paintsville), Wednesday vs. Jackson City (District Game), Friday at Breathitt County (District Game).

 

8 ) Estill County (2-1):

Engineers split two games this week: Estill County split their two games this week, getting thumped badly by Wolfe County 80-51 on the road and then running over Berea 75-50 this afternoon. 

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday vs. Woodford County, Friday vs. Lee County (District Game), Saturday at Rowan County (Stock Yards & Trust Bank Challenge).

 

9) Powell County (2-2):

Pirates drop two out of three: Powell County dropped two out of three games this week. They fell to both Williamstown 71-51 on the road, 66-52 to Wolfe County at home but would be able to bounce back and pick up a big district win on the road at Owsley County 57-40.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday at Montgomery County, Thursday vs. Morgan County, Saturday at Hazard (DJ Begley Classic).

 

10) Buckhorn (3-3):

Buckhorn goes 2-1 this week: The Wildcats picked up two wins out of their three games this week. Good week to be a Wildcat fan. Buckhorn defeated both Lee County 65-62 on the road and Jackson City 76-55 on the road as well. The lone loss came to Floyd Central 93-81 at home.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Leslie County (District Game), Tuesday at Hazard (District Game), Friday vs. Shelby Valley/Sat. vs. Fleming County (Both at Rowan County Stock Yards & Trust Challenge).

 

11) Lee County (2-2):

The Bobcats win streak is snapped: The Bobcats 2 game win streak was snapped this past week when they dropped both of their games. Both were at home. Jackson County got the best of Lee County 76-66 and Buckhorn would break the hearts of many Bobcats fans and players with a 65-62 win.

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Model, Tuesday vs. Owsley County (District Game), Friday at Estill County (District Game).

 

12) Leslie County (0-3):

Leslie County continues to struggle: Leslie County is still searching for win #1 on the season after they have dropped their first three games. All three have been blowouts. Hazard defeated Leslie County 72-48 and Jackson County defeated the Eagles as well 78-65. 

Upcoming Schedule: Monday at Buckhorn (District Game), Tuesday vs. Floyd Central, Friday at Barbourville.

 

13) Owsley County (2-3):

The Owls continue dropping: Owsley County dropped two of their three games last week, falling to both Powell County 57-40 in a big district game and 75-47 to Jackson County in the PRTC Classic at Jackson County. The Owls lone win came against Jenkins 51-47. Owsley does have a COVID-19 win as their game with Berea earlier in the season was canceled due to COVID-19.

Upcoming Schedule: Tuesday at Lee County (District Game), Thursday vs. Jackson City, Saturday at Breathitt County (Peggy Moore Classic).

 

14) Jackson City (0-3):

Tigers still searching for win #1: Jackson City dropped their lone game this week to Buckhorn 76-55 on their own home court which has ran their losing streak to three straight games. Jackson City has been blowed out in all three of those games. When will win #1 come?

Upcoming Schedule: Monday vs. Jenkins, Wednesday at Wolfe County (District Game), Thursday at Owsley County, Friday vs. LIGHT (Danville KY Home School).
