BluegrassPreps.com 14th Region Week 1 Review

We are officially in basketball season as the first week has came and gone. We've seen some surprises in the 14th, some upsets, if you will. Surprises like Knott County Central getting upset. Wolfe County falling hard in their first two games by a combined score of 72 points. With that said, let's take a look back at week 1 in the 14th Region.

1) Breathitt County (2-0): The Bobcats have dropped 95 points in their first two games, no that's not 95 combined, that's 95 each game they have scored. The Bobcats kicked the season off with a 95-68 win over visiting Wellspring Guardians, Richmond KY Home School. Breathitt County would return to action two days later on December 4th, on the road, well up on the hill behind Breathitt County High School, as they took on district foe, Jackson City, this game was a little worse than the Wellsprings game as Breathitt County cruised past the Tigers 95-40.

The Bobcats will return to action on Tuesday night as they take on Johnson Central (the first of two meetings) in the WYMT Mountain Classic at Knott County Central. Tip is set for 7:45 PM.

2) Perry County Central (1-1): The Commodores didn't have the start like they were hoping to have. They took it on the chin on opening night, getting thrashed by visiting Harlan County. The Black Bears left John C. Combs Arena with a 86-65 victory. Seething from that loss, the Commodores would bounce back just a few days later and pick up a big 14th region win over Cordia 77-73. Rydge Beverly is leading the Commodores in scoring thus far with 23 ppg.

The Commodores will return to action on Wednesday as they will take on Paintsville in the opening round of the WYMT Mountain Classic at Knott County Central. Tip is set for 7:45 PM. 

3) Hazard (1-0): Hazard is technically 2-0 but they've only played one game. Their opening game against Berea was canceled due to COVID-19. Hazard officially opened the season at home against Owsley County. The Bulldogs wouldn't have much of a problem from the Owls as they rolled to an 76-39 win. 

Hazard has multiple games this week; Tues. vs. Leslie County (District game),  Thurs. at Whitley County, Sat. at Cordia.

4) Knott County Central (1-1): The Patriots didn't open the season the way they wanted too as they took a big district loss to Letcher County Central 53-47. Stinging from the loss, the Patriots would bounce back with a 78-66 win over Prestonsburg.

Knott County Central will host Harlan Independent on Wednesday at 6 PM in the WYMT Mountain Classic..

5) Letcher County Central (1-1): The surprise of the 14th, maybe the Cougars from Letcher County Central. The Cougars made a statement to the rest of the 14th region as they defeated defending 14th region champions, Knott County Central 53-47 on opening night. The Cougars' win would be halted however, just a few days later when they took a 57-54 loss to Newport Central Catholic at the Legacy Nissan Classic at North Laurel.

Letcher County Central has multiple games this week; Tues. vs. Prestonsburg, Thurs. at Cordia (District Game), Sat. vs. Pike County Central.

6) Cordia (1-1): The Lions started the season off good, picking up a 88-77 win over Onedia Baptist Institute. The win would be short lived as they would fall in the next game to region foe, Perry County Central but they wouldn't go down without a fight in the 77-73 loss. 

The Lions will only have two games this week, per KHSAA; Thurs. vs. Letcher County Central (District Game), Sat. vs. Hazard..

7) Wolfe County (0-2): The Wolves have been rattled. Wolfe County has started the season losing both of their first two games by a combined score of 72 points. Paintsville handed the Wolves the season opening loss 72-47. George Rogers Clark wouldn't be so kind to the Wolves either, as they crushed Wolfe County 83-36. Can the Wolves regroup and get on track this week or will the losses continue piling up?

Wolfe County has two games this week; Wed. at Powell County, Fri. vs. Estill County.

8 ) Estill County (1-0): The Engineers picked up a thrilling win over Sayre 62-61 to open the season. This was a tremendous back and forth game before returning senior, Will Isfort would win the game for Estill, making 1/2 free throws to give Estill the 62-61 win. 

Estill County has just one game this week and it's a big one; Fri. at Wolfe County.

9) Leslie County (0-1): The Eagles have yet picked up their first win on the season. The Eagles fell to Whitley County 56-41 to open the season. Leslie County was scheduled to play Perry County Central in a big district game on the 3rd but was canceled due to electricity issues.

Leslie County has two games this week; Tues. at Hazard, Fri. at Jackson County (PRTC Classic).

10) Buckhorn (1-2): The team that's played more games than anyone else in the 14th region and they've only got 1 win to show for it. Buckhorn would fall to Oneida Baptist Institute 83-66 to open the season but would bounce back and pick up a 79-74 over Jenkins but would fall right back into the loss column as they would fall to Williamsburg 78-65 in the Ted Cook Classic at South Laurel.

Buckhorn will host Floyd Central on Tuesday. Thurs. at Lee County, Sat. at Jackson City.

11) Lee County (2-0): Surprisingly the Bobcats are off to a good start, picking up wins over both Prestonsburg 59-56 and Jackson City 70-34. Zach Watterson continues to lead the Bobcats. He's averaging 20 ppg so far this season. Can Lee County keep up the good work?

Tues. vs. Jackson County, Thurs. vs. Buckhorn.

12) Powell County (1-0): The Pirates made a big statement to open up the season with a thrashing 36 point victory over Morgan County 66-30. One thing is for sure, if Powell County can keep up this kind of work, they just may be bringing home the 56th district trophy this season.

Tues. at Williamstown, Wed. vs. Wolfe County, Fri. at Owsley County (district game).

13) Owsley County (1-1): Technically the Owls are 2-1 because their game with Berea was canceled due to COVID-19. Owsley County started the season off with a thrilling 51-49 victory over Menifee County. That victory however would be short lived as they would get ran over by Hazard 76-39.

Wed. vs. Jenkins, Fri. vs. Powell County (district game), Sat. at Jackson County (PRTC Classic)

14) Jackson City (0-2): The Tigers have started off horrible, I mean horrible. They have lost both of their games by a combined score of 91 points. Lee County handed the Tigers their first loss of the season 70-34. Breathitt County would out do that score and pick up a big 95-40 win to move to 1-0 in 55th district play.

Sat. vs. Buckhorn.
