Covington Catholic 2 Somerset 1 [2OT] (Elite 8 of State Tournament)

CovCath makes the trip down 75 to Somerset, with what sounded like a LOT of their students and fans in tow, and comes from behind to take down the host Briar Jumpers.  Somerset jumped ahead 1-0 in the 2nd half, but CovCath managed to get the equalizer later in the half and regulation came to an end at 1-1.  After a scoreless 1st OT, senior Luke Gallenstein fires a shot from distance that takes a funny bounce off of the seam between the turf inside the 6 and the natural grass everywhere else, and that was all the Colonels needed to advance to this week's Final Four.  CovCath, like St. Xavier last year, advances to the final four of the state tournament after winning two road games -- not an easy task.

Somerset's fantastic season comes to an end in the KY Elite 8, and seeing the Briar Jumpers win their first 12th Region Soccer Championship since 2001.  They are coached by Cory Gillum, they have a big and talented freshmen in goal to build around, and they will show next year that their 12-6-1 season wasn't just because of their super-talented forward, Derek Arias.  Congrats to Somerset on a wonderfully successful season, and congrats on being a state Elite 8 team in 2021.
