mcpapa Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Finally, the weather cooperated and just about everyone got most if not all of their scheduled games in. The top half of the rankings stays nearly intact, with some movement within the lower tier. 1). Clark County (12-3, 8-0 region, 5-0 district, . 625 RPI). 79-88 loss at Wolfe County, 74-67 win at Montgomery County Previous rank - 1 This week - vs. Bourbon County, vs. Madison Central, vs. Bryan Station Clark returned from COVID timeout a little rusty against Wolfe County. Jerone Morton returned to the lineup after a few weeks off with a broken hand and led the squad with 26 points, with Reshaun Hampton and Jared Wellman adding 16 and 13, but the Cards weren't able to contain Wolfe's backcourt. Saturday was a different story as GRC kept both their district and region undefeated records intact with the win on the road. Wellman led the way with 19 points, with Aden Slone contributing 16 2). Mason County (14-3, 7-2 region, 3-0 district, .622 RPI) - 59-56 win at Harrison County, 102-53 win vs. Fleming County, 88-74 win at Augusta. Previous rank - 2 This week - vs. Dixie Heights, at Walton-Verona Mason County started the week with a narrow overtime victory in Cynthiana, as the high-flying Royals were grounded for much of the contest by Harrison County's inside presence. The reliable trio of Nate Mitchell, Terrell Henry and Philip Bierley accounted for 47 of Mason's 59 points. Friday was a different story as the Royals bolted to an 80-28 mid-third quarter advantage and played everyone on the roster in the rout over Fleming County. Ten Royals scored and five reached double figures - Mitchell with 24, AP Perry 15, Braylon Hamilton and Bierley each with 14 and Henry with 10. Finally, Mitchell paced the squad with 30 on 11-15 shooting against Augusta, ably supported by Henry (22/9) and Bierley (13/14). Week 9 will prove to be more difficult as the Royals face strong opposition from 8th and 9th Region representatives. in a bit of trivia, the Royals took over the region’s top RPI ranking by .001 for approximately 24 hours - from Friday evening until GRC dispatched MoCo the next day Mason County drew Augusta in the 39th District draw. 3). Campbell County (13-7, 7-2 region, 2-1 district, .590 RPI) - 81-69 win at Augusta, 75-81 OT loss at Conner, 67-64 win vs. Holmes. Previous rank - 4 This week - vs. Newport, at Highlands. Only four Camels scored at Augusta, but three of them had double-doubles - Aydan Hamilton (27/11), Dane Hegyi (22/11; 10-11 shooting) and Eric The Red Davie (15/15); while Garrett Beiting accounted for the other 17. Beiting paced the team with 31 as the Camels fell just short on the road at Conner in overtime. Hamilton, Beiting and Hegyi led the way in the hard-fought win against Holmes with 22, 16 and 10, while Davie garnered 14 caroms. 4). Montgomery County (9-5, 7-3 region, 4-2 district, .567 RPI) - 77-46 win at Paris, 49-55 loss vs. Madison Central, 67-74 loss vs. Clark County Previous rank - 3 This week - vs. Boyd County, at Western Hills, vs, Harlan County The Indians started the week off with a romp over 40th District foe Paris, led by Harrison Hagan's 19 points. Also reaching double figures were Eric Morgan and Brandon Dyer. Ricky Lovette's double-double streak (every game of the season) came to an end with his 9/14 statline. The Indians were held to just 36% shooting by Madison Central; with Hagan the only double-figure scorer at 20. Lovette did keep his double-figure rebounding string alive with ten boards. Lovette got back to his double-double ways in the loss to Clark County 5). Scott (10-8, 4-0 region, 3-0 district, .571 RPI) - 46-81 loss vs, Dixie Heights, 57-64 loss at Beechwood, 69-51 win vs. Bishop Brossart. Previous rank - 5 This week - vs. Augusta, vs. Cooper, at Fleming County The 9th Region wasn't kind to Coach Fromeyer's Eagles, who fell hard to Dixie; with Grant Profitt the only double-figure scored at 22. The Eagles showed much better against a strong Beechwood Tigers quintet and hung tough until late. Profitt was held to 6 in this one, while Cameron Patterson, Dasani Land and Brayden Howell picked up the scoring pace with 19, 14 and 10. The friendly confinces were much to Scott's liking as they remained perfect in the 37th District with an 18-point defeat of Brossart. The Eagles scorched the nets from everywhere, including 8-11 from distance. Profitt had 20 points (including 5-7 from three) while Riley Huff had 16, Howell 14 and Patterson 10/12. 6). Robertson County (11-4, 6-2 region, 1-1 district, .559 RPI) - 87-67 win at Fleming County, 63-71 loss at West Carter, 68-55 win at Pendleton County, 87-57 win vs. Bracken County. Previous rank - 6 This week - at Nicholas County, vs. Rowan County Justin Becker had a monster 35/16 game in Flemingsburg on 16-20 shooting. Robertson then traveled to Olive Hill for their first-round game in the All-A Classic against West Carter. The Devils had a couple of 6-points lead in the fourth quarter, but West was able to take the game into overtime and ultimately prevailed. Becker, Sebastian Dixon and Brandon Dice scored 20, 17 and 12, with 14 of Becker's 20 coming from the charity stripe. No stats available as of the writing for the final two games of the week. 7). Bishop Brossart (9-9, 46-3 region, 0-2 district, .503 RPI) - 65-62 win vs. Pendleton County, 58-57 win at Lewis County, 68-48 win vs. Harrison County, 69-51 loss vs. Scott. Previous rank - 8 This week - vs. vs. Covington Holy Cross, vs. Augusta, vs. Henry County. Coach Code's wounded warriors continue to adjust their lineup; as it seems that when one man finally gets healthy, another goes down; with the Week 8 casualty being leading scorer and rebounder (19.9/7.2) Stephen Verst. Verst, who scorched the nets for 32 on 8-8 shooting against Pendleton County, has missed the last three games. Carson Schirmer (who notched 16 against Pendleton) led the team with 23 in the narrow victory over Lewis County, with David Govan and Mason Sepate contributing 14 and 13. Robbie Verst (yes, he's a younger brother) paced the 'stangs with 21 in the win over Harrison, with Govan and Schirmer (who looks to be playing well after a football injury had sidelined him until a couple of weeks ago) had 18 and 15. However, the Mustangs are still looking for the elusive first 37th District after falling to Scott on the road on Friday and playing their fourth game in five days. Schirmer, Sepate and Govan all reached double figures in this one. 8). Harrison County (10-9, 6-6 region, 2-1 district, .499 RPI) - 56-59 loss vs. Mason County, 48-68 loss at Bishop Brossart, 40-36 win vs. Bryan Station. Previous rank - 7 This week - vs. no games appear on the schedule. Five Breds reached double figures against Nicholas County, as The Custards led the way with 15 and 13. Kaydon and Tayshaun (19 and 15) led the way again as Harrison hung with favored Mason County all game before falling in overtime on a last-second three. In a result that surprised this intrepid reporter just a bit, no Thorobreds reached double figures in a 20-point whipping at the hands of Bishop Brossart in Alexandria. I don't know if this is a scheduling quirk or what, but the Scoreboard shows no upcoming games for Harrison County. 9). Calvary Christian (15-6, 4-3 region, 0-2 district, .521 RPI) - 60-66 loss vs. Ludlow, 57-40 win at Pendleton County, 100-28 win vs. Hillsboro (OH) Christian, 61-50 win at Walden. Previous rank - 9 This week - vs. Dayton, vs. Bellevue. Once again the Cougars win the games they should and add in the occasional surprise. The narrow loss to Ludlow was the second such this season. Logan Hinkle led the way with 20 points, while Carter Hudson had a game-high 18 rebounds. Same story in the Pendleton County game - Hinkle with 19 points and Hudson with 10 boards. The laugher over Hillsboro saw a half-dozen Cougars reach double figures and three grab ten rebounds. Ethan Mulling had a team-high 21 in the victory over a Walden squad that hadn't played a game since January 25. 10). Augusta (9-8, 5-5 region, 3-2 district, .492 RPI) - 60-76 loss at NewCath, 69-81 loss vs. Campbell County, 81-52 win at Bath County, 74-88 loss vs. Mason County. Previous rank - 10 This week - at Pendleton County, at Scott, at Bishop Brossart. Kayson Hinson led the Panthers with 26 in the loss at NCC which saw A-Town down by just a bucket at halftime; while Riley Mastin had 26 and 12 in the Campbell County tilt. Hinson notched the scarce triple-double in Owingsville (18/14/10) with Mastin pouring in another dozen; a game which saw Coach Jason Hinson record his 100th win at Augusta. The Panthers fell behind Mason County by 15 in the first quarter; held serve the rest of the way but never really threatened. Augusta drew Mason County in the 39th District tournament draw. 11). Pendleton County (7-8, 4-6 region, 2-1 district, .449 RPI) - 62-65 loss at Bishop Brossart, 40-57 loss vs. Calvary Christian, 55-68 loss vs. Robertson County. Previous rank - 12 This week - vs. Augusta, at Beechwood, vs, Boone County, at Grant County. Pendleton showed reasonably well in the losses to Brossart and Robertson, but 34% shooting and only 6 points from leading scorer Tredyn Thomas was not a recipe for success against Calvary. The week 9 schedule certainly isn't any easier. 12). Nicholas County (7-13, 2-7 region, 0-2 district, .375 RPI) - 75-56 win vs. Powell County, 69-53 win vs. Paris, 67-52 win at Dayton, 58-80 loss at Fleming County. Previous rank - 14 This week - vs. Robertson County, vs. Berea, vs. Fairview. The Jackets went 3-1 last week, only dropping the Fleming County contest. Dalton Davenport with a nice 22/13 effort against Powell; 22 again against Paris while Brady Switzer and Lincoln Morris recorded double-doubles; 22 again (I sense a pattern here) versus Dayton; while Switzer led the scoring parade in the Fleming County game with 16. 13A). Paris (3-11, 2-9 region, 1-5 district, .391 RPI) - 46-77 loss vs. Montgomery County, 53-69 loss at Nicholas County, 78-69 win at Bracken County, 57-54 win vs. Bourbon County. Previous rank - 15 This week - vs. Woodford County, at Great Crossing. The Hounds lost their first two games of the week, but bounced back with their second and third wins of the season on back-to-back victories in Brooksville and against crosstown (more like down the street) rival Bourbon County. Ricquice Washington poured in 31 in the Bracken County contest; and followed up with 23 against Bourbon. Good to see Coach Baker's crew experience some late-season success. 13B). Bracken County (6-17, 2-11 region, 0-3 district, .425 RPI) - 52-77 loss vs. NewCath, 74-90 loss vs. Covington Holy Cross, 69-78 loss vs. Paris, 57-87 loss vs. Robertson County. Previous rank - 11 This week - vs. NewCath, vs. Covington Holy Cross, vs. Paris, at Robertson County. The Polar Bears find themselves in free fall, dropping all four home games last week, seven in a row and ten of the last eleven. Blake Reed continues to shine, scoring 102 points last week - 27 against NCC, another 27 against Holy Cross, 26 against Paris and 22 against Robertson County. I think that Bracken when all is said and done will redeem their drop in the rankings as they seem to play to the level of the competition, but the home loss to Paris gives one pause. Bracken County drew St. Patrick in the 39th District Tournament draw. 15). Bourbon County (3-12, 3-6 region, 1-4 district, .391 RPI) - 43-61 loss at Woodford County, 43-49 loss at Marion County, 54-57 loss at Paris. Previous rank - 14 This week - at Clark County, vs. Bracken County, vs. Belfry. Jack Huckabay was the sole Colonel reaching double figures in the losses to Woodford and Marion with 18 and 19. Bourbon has dropped four straight. 16). St. Patrick (1-17, 0-8 region, 0-1 district, .301 RPI) - 27-67 loss at Elliott County, 33-71 loss to Villa Madonna. Previous rank - 16 This week - at Rose Hill, at Williamstown. Chase Walton with 20 and 12 against Elliott County. The Saints drew Bracken County in the 39th District draw. 2 1
