South Oldham vs. North Oldham Predictions/Updates

Recommended Posts

The South Oldham Lady Dragons face off with the North Oldham Lady Mustangs on Friday, 1/29/21, in Crestwood in a key 29th District seeding game.

North, who defeated Oldham County by 21 points on Friday to move to 1-0 in the district, will clinch the District 29 #1 seed with an upset of the favored Lady Dragons.    Since it is a 3 team district, the #1 seed will automatically get a "bye" and a berth in the District championship game, thereby earning an automatic pass to the 8th Region tournament.

North Oldham, formed in 2003, has never advanced to the girls' 8th region tournament.   This year's tournament will be hosted at North Oldham, so the karma looks promising for Lady Mustangs.

North's victory over Oldham County ended a 26-game losing streak to the Lady Colonels.   North is now just 2-26 all-time against Oldham County.

South Oldham is on a three game winning streak heading into this week's games.    The Lady Dragons gave a brutally dominant performance on Saturday in a 74-54 rout of the Assumption Rockets.   Four Lady Dragons finished in double figures and two - Ella Morrison 26 points / 11 rebounds and Sierra Kemelgor 16 points 13 rebounds - finished with double-doubles.   South had an overwhelming performance on the glass, grabbing 45 rebounds, but it was the South transition game that ran the Rockets off the court.

If South wins, then South will be in the driver's seat for the district #1 seed with a 1-0 mark, but  the final determination of the district #1 seed won't come until after South Oldham and Oldham County square off.   North would still retain some hope of the #1 seed if Oldham County should upset South and leave all three teams with a 1-1 seeding record.

Players to watch:

Riley Neal of North Oldham is one of the region's elite players.   Neal, a junior, reached the 1,000 point career scoring threshold in North's second game of the season, against Highlands.   A walking double-double machine, Neal will walk away from Goshen with a lot of North Oldham records, and is on pace for possibly 2,000 career points.

Katelyn Vize, a sophomore for North, may be one of the up-and-comers to keep on your radar this year.   A voracious rebounder, Katelyn Vize got a double-double in her first start on the varsity this year against LexCath.    She should end the season as one of the Lady Mustangs' top scorers and rebounders.

Ella Morrison of South Oldham is one of the most exciting young players coming up in the 8th Region ranks.    As a starter last year - as an 8th-grader - she averaged just a tic under 10 ppg and ranked third on the team in scoring.   An electric, powerful player, Morrison - a guard - racked up an impressive double-double Saturday against Assumption with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Sierra Kemelgor of South may be one of the most complete players in the region.   A good ballhandler, Kemelgor is handling the majority of the point guard duties for South.   Kemelgor, however, is also a talented scorer who exploded onto the scene last year in the post-season.  Kemelgor is equally adept at long-range jumpers and penetrating moves to the basket, and she showed both off in a double-double performance Saturday against Assumption when she had 16 points / 13 rebounds.
