Spencer County 50 Shelby County 44

Featured Replies

Spencer County, one of the preseason favorites in the 8th region, struggled but came away with a season-opening 30th District win last night, 50-44, over Shelby County.

The Bears were without the services of pre-season 8th Region POY candidate Sam Conley, who apparently suffered a wrist injury over the weekend.

Jake Whitlock dominated the game for Spencer, hitting 13 of 17 shots and making 4 of 5 FTs for a game-high 30 points.   Lucas Hornback was the only other Bear in double digits with 13 points.

Outside of Whitlock, the rest of the Bears were a combined 3 of 11 from inside the arc and 4 of 18 beyond it.

Spencer shot just 38.5% from the floor overall and 16.7% beyond the arc, but compensated by outrebounding Shelby, 29-22.

Shelby was led by Trenton Burchfield with 17 points and JaShon Marshall with 10 points.   Burchfield, who is poised to perhaps have a breakout year for Shelby, hit 4 of 3 threes.

Tim Fuller, a transfer from Great Crossing, failed to score for Shelby, going a combined 0 for 8 from the field, but he led all players on the glass with 7 boards.
