1. Clay County (1-0)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers are 2-0 and haven’t missed a beat with the absence of either Jayme Gilbert or Gemma Gray.

 

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Tigers have won their first two games by a staggering 41 and 24 points. Not too shabby for the defending 13th Region champions.

Paige Jackson scored 18 points in the win.

 

What’s ahead: Clay County will be busy this week. The Lady Tigers will play Evarts Friday, Pike County Central Saturday and Rockcastle County Tuesday.

 

2. Whitley County (3-0)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Colonels move up a spot to the No. 2 slot after remaining unbeaten with wins over Corbin and Cawood.

 

Surprise, surprise: Whitley County’s defensive play is some of the best in the area. Larry Anderson’s squad is only giving up 34 points a game so far this season.

 

What’s ahead: Whitley County has a showdown today with No. 3 South Laurel. A win would put the Lady Colonels in the the driver’s seat for the No. 1 seed in the 50th District. The Lady Colonels will be back in action Tuesday against Williamsburg.

 

3. South Laurel (1-1)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Cardinals didn’t look good during their 51-43 loss to Casey County on Friday. South Laurel turned the ball over too much and couldn’t hit from the free throw line. Add those two together and you will get an eight-point home loss.

 

Surprise, surprise: South Laurel needs to get production from the post area, but the Lady Cardinals also need to cut down on their turnovers, too.

 

What’s ahead: The Lady Cardinals have a big district showdown today against Whitley County. South Laurel eliminated the Lady Colonels from post-season action in the 50th District Tournament last season. The Lady Cardinals will travel to Corbin in another district match-up Monday.

 

4. North Laurel (4-0)

What’s the scoop: North Laurel is playing solid ball right now, but the scary thing is, coach Roy Bowling believes his team can play a whole lot better.

 

Surprise, surprise: North Laurel is getting solid production from Stephanie Strange, Bobbie Jo Harris and Makenzie Pritchard.

If you know Bowling, then you’ll know he preaches the inside game first and the perimeter second. It seems as if the Lady Jaguars players are listening to their legendary coach.

 

What’s ahead: North Laurel is scheduled to play Friday at home against Boyle County and will be back in action Monday at home against Perry Central.

 

5. Corbin (2-1)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Redhounds drop a spot after losing to Whitley County this past week.

 

Surprise, surprise: It still seems as if the Lady Redhounds are struggling a bit at the guard positions, but look for things to get better as the season progresses.

 

What’s ahead: Corbin will travel to Cawood Saturday before hosting South Laurel in an important district match-up Monday.

No. 6 Barbourville (2-1)

What’s the scoop: Coach Brandon Hillard’s Lady Tigers could be the most-improved team in the 13th Region. Callie Mills is one of the most underrated players in the region and Ashley Banfield has been a big addition to the roster. This is the highest rating Barbourville has had in the Fear ‘Les’ 13th Regional Rankings.

 

No. 7 Cumberland (3-0)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Redskins haven’t played a tough schedule, but you have to give them credit, they are undefeated.

 

No. 8 Jackson County (2-0)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Generals are 2-0 and continue to improve behind the play of Kourtney Tyra.

 

No. 9 Bell County (1-1)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Bobcats dropped a decision to Corbin, but look for Bell County to get better as the season goes on.

 

No. 10 Evarts (3-0)

What’s the scoop: The last time Evarts had a win streak this big was back in 2004 when the Lady Wildcats won five in a row.

She was hurt in the off-season, but she's supposed to be ready to go this season, from what I've been told. Maybe someone from Clay Co. could fill us in.

He's a legend, no doubt. I remember his state championship teams in the 1970s.

 

I've got them fifth and you have them fourth. That's not much of a difference.

Gemma had knee surgery to repair her ACL in July. She is expected to return to the team in mid December or early January.

I knew she had been injured but wasn't sure if she was back 100 percent or not.

I forgot Middlesboro the other day.

Corbin beat South Laurel, so they should move up.
