USF starter Colin Sullivan pitched 7 innings, gave up 1 run on 3 hits, and struck out 11 in the conference opener in Tampa, last night.

AJ Bumpass opened the 2nd with a homer, then UC (6-14, 0-1) pulled starter AJ Kullman in the 5th after he walked 2, gave up 2 singles, and hit a batter resulting in 2 USF (12-8, 1-0) runs. Evan Shawver took the Bearcats through the 7th, giving up 2 more runs.

UC made it interesting in the 9th. After Mitch Holding flied out to open the inning, Jeremy Johnson singled off USF closer Nelson Alvarez and stole 2nd. Jace Mercer walked. Then Joey Bellini reached on a fielder's choice. Mercer advanced to second on a fielding error and Johnson advanced to third. Wyatt Stapp sacrificed Johnson home, then on a double steal, Mercer got to third and Bellini to second. However, Joey Wiemer grounded out to 2nd to end the game.

The series continues tonight at 6:30.
