Saturday before last Mrs. S and I went to see the USF ladies play Witchita State. USF won, but it was still sad to see 4 of the 5 players that started for them at the beginning in of the season standing in street clothes watching warmups. Tonight's game with UConn was Senior Night and the season finale for both programs. Jose Fernandez dressed only 8 players again, this time, though, one was special.

Laura Ferreira was starting her last game and her first since contracting an undisclosed illness which basically ended her career early in the season. Fernandez described her illness at the time as "bigger than basketball." She sat next to me at the Women's banquet a couple of years ago. At the time, she was working on a degree in exercise science, hoping to stay in the US after graduation, and become a US citizen. Nice young lady. I wish the best for her.

In a nice moment by UConn and Geno Auriemma, the Huskies conceded the opening tap to USF and Laura was allowed to take an uncontested layup. Immediately after which the officials called time and Laura was taken out. USF played the rest of the game with 7 players, as they have done much of the season.

The ladies went on to play an inspired game. USF (16-14, 7-9) had the lead at halftime and UConn (28-2, 16-0) only led by 3 with 6:26 to go in the game.
