1st call for snow 2/15-16/19

Featured Replies

There is a very good possibility of some accumulating snow starting Friday evening and ending by Saturday morning. All three models are in agreement about a band of snow advancing across the state. They just differ on the accumulation totals. The GFS is putting down some light snow while the NAM and the GFS-FV3, which will be replacing the GFS soon come in with higher totals.

They also differ on the amount of possible freezing rain accumulations. The GFS has it mainly in western Kentucky while the NAM and GFS-FV3 have the freezing rain falling on more parts of the state.

For now, I'm going with 1-4" of snow accumulations. I'm watching the freezing rain because depending on how fast the warm-up comes Saturday we may see more of a freezing rain event than snow. I will post my second call in the morning.

I'm seeing a somewhat narrow path of possible accumulating snow from this evening through early Saturday morning. For now 1-2". This looks to be confined to south of I-64 to around the Cumberland Pkwy. The freezing rain looks to be mainly west of I-65 with some pockets in southeastern Kentucky. Amounts look to be light less than .10". This may cause some travel problems early Saturday but shouldn't last long as temps are forecast to be in the middle to upper 30s by Saturday afternoon. Some in southern parts of Kentucky may even reach the low 40s.

Have a blessed Friday. I will update later today.

There seems to be a shift towards the south of the track of this system. I'm still saying 1-3". The new GFS-FV3 is showing a little higher in accumulation totals. Both the GFS and GFS-FV3 have a bullseye on the area between Bowling Green and Somerset areas for the possible highest accumulation totals. The track is centered for now on the Cumberland PKWY. There is also the possible freezing rain accumulations which look like they will be mainly in western Kentucky and parts of southeast Kentucky.
