1. Corbin Redhounds (3A, 4-0)- Corbin jumps back into action this week in a big way travelling to Clarksville, TN to take on the powerhouses Mayfield Cardinals. This series has been tremendously competitive and expect that to continue.

 

2. Johnson Central Golden Eagles (4A, 3-1)- Moore was a quality challenge for Johnson Central, but the boys from Paintsville were too strong. District play starts with an over-matched Boyd County team.

 

3. Belfry Pirates (3A, 3-1)- Belfry got every bit the challenge from Pikeville they were looking for and then some, but the Pirates claimed the big road victory. Belfry should have a chance to work on some things and add a couple wins the next two weeks starting with Sheldon Clark.

 

4. Ashland Tomcats (4A, 5-0)- Ashland remained undefeated by taking down Ironton, OH but the game was much more closer than expected. Ironton is a tough place to play, but this is also not a vintage Fighting Tiger team. Ashland draws a surprising 4-1 Rowan County next.

 

5. Pikeville Panthers (1A, 3-1)- Pikeville tasted defeat for the first time despite looking impressive against rival Belfry. The Panthers have no room to rest as they travel all the way to Point Pleasant, WV to take on one of the better mid-sized schools in the Mountain State this year.

 

6. Southwestern Warriors (5A, 5-0)- Southwestern's revenge tour continued with a blowout of Madison Southern. Southwestern will take a week off before aiming for yet another 6A foe.

 

7. Raceland Rams (1A, 4-1)- Raceland exploded Offensively on Lucasville Valley, OH in a Saturday tilt. The Rams will keep their focus on the Buckeye State as undefeated Portsmouth West is up next.

 

8. Knox Central Panthers (4A, 3-1)- Knox punched the time clock in a rout of 2A Green County and will now calibrate on winning a District Title. Russell County is up first and is improved, but expect Knox to keep their winning ways going.

 

9. Bell County Bobcats (3A, 4-0)- Bell remained undefeated but their schedule has yet to really put a worthy challenge before them. The Bobcats should make it 5-straight with hapless McCreary Central next and then we will see that first big hurdle.

 

10. Somerset Briarjumpers (2A, 4-1)- The Bunnies keep hopping along as Somerset dismantled North Laurel. Somerset will stay up in Class for another week against a 4A Rockcastle County team that has struggled to stop any form of Offense.

 

11. Wayne County Cardinals (4A, 3-2)- The Cardinals kept Harlan County's face to the mat in blowout fashion and continue to seek respect as a 4A threat. Clay County is next and the Tigers need a rebound after getting spanked by Perry Central.

 

12. Perry Central Commodores (5A, 4-0)- It's time to start giving Perry Central some love as they handled Clay County and now look like a team who have a shot at the running the table in the regular season. Letcher Central is up next and it should be a quality test.

 

13. Hazard Bulldogs (1A, 2-1)- Hazard's 9-game schedule meant an extra BYE week following their first loss. The Bulldogs should be able to keep Prestonsburg in a hole as Hazard will be able to outclass the Balckcats.

 

14. Paintsville Tigers (1A, 3-2)- Painsvville got a bit of a tougher challenge from Williamsburg than they were expecting. The Tigers were able to hold on in a tight ballgame, but now they will need to back it up against a confident Lawrence County team.

 

15. Pulaski County Maroons (5A, 3-2)- The Maroonsearned a hard fought win over a quality Allen County- Scottsville team. Pulaski seems to be pointing in the right direction after a rough start to the season and should be able to keep Uncle Mo moving forward against Madison Southern.

Three Teams Moving Toward the Top:

Lynn Camp Wildcats (1A, 4-0)- Expect Lynn Camp to be 6-0 before taking on Pineville in a big District match in a few weeks.

 

Lawrence County Bulldogs (3A, 3-2)- Most expected Lawrence County to lose to Greenup County. Very few expected Lawrence County to win. Noone expected Lawrence County to crush Greenup.

 

Rowan County Vikings (4A, 4-1)- How bout those Vikes? Traditional doormat Rowan County is off to a red hot start and just crushed a Bourbon County who may very well win their District. If the vikings can pull the shocker this week expect them to make a big move in the rankings.

 

 

Three Teams Needing Confidence:

Whitley County Colonels (5A, 1-3)- Every week their win over Leslie County looks worse and their loss to Rockcastle does as well. The Colonels were ran off the field against bell County and desperately need to win against East Jessamine.

 

Greenup County Musketeers (4A, 3-2)- The Musketeers used the express lane to exit the rankings after back to back losses. Raceland was acceptable, but getting beat 37-6 to Lawrence County means it is time to circle the wagons.

 

Leslie County Eagles (2A, 0-5)- Noone in Hyden would have expected an 0-5 start. Breathitt County was the latest to beat the Eagles. All hope is not lost though, with Prestonsburg reeling the next three District games are all winnable and despite the rough start it i still not unlikely to see an October clash with Shelby Valley with a District Title on the line.

 

 

Player of the Week:

Seth Johnson, Shelby Valley

It was a historic night for Johnson as he rushed 14 times for 380 yards and 4 TD's against Jenkins. Shelby Valley appears to be the team to beat in their District and Johnson is the straw that stirs the drink.

 

Game of the Week:

West Carter at Russell- There is no better kickoff to the District slate than a game that could play a huge factor in crowning the Champion in Class 3A, District 5. Bath County certainly will still have a lot to say, but whoever wins this match-up will certainly control their own destiny.

What's the background story to Corbin and Mayfield playing in Clarksville?

 

They wanted a neutral site with nice facilities that at least offered somewhat of a travel reprieve.

 

When Mayfield is the home team, they have played at Austin Peay. When Corbin has been the home team they have played at Lindsey Wilson College.

 

Clarksville is roughly 1.5 hours from Mayfield and 3.75 hours from Corbin

Lindsey Wilson (Columbia) is basically the direct reverse.

 

Obviously Union College (Corbin) and Murray State (Mayfield) are closer neutral fields, but if either hosted it would require about a 5 hour trip when the other team had to make the trip.

 

It certainly is interesting that two times we have had one of the best games featuring two Bluegrass State teams being played in the Volunteer State.
