4A North Oldham vs 5A Oldham County

Featured Replies

Cross-county rivalry time in Buckner, KY as the Oldham County Colonels host North Oldham.

One young coach is going to get his first victory at his school.

North coach Joe Gamsky, in his second year, faced a tough matchup is a much bigger, faster Western Warrior team last week, and injuries to star WR Brandon Rose and QB Tanner McCoy that forced Rose to sit nearly all the game and McCoy to sit much of the second half made that task even more difficult. The offense simply couldn't move the ball on the ground against the speedy Warriors, with total negative net rushing yardage. Though the Mustangs would go down to defeat, 41-9, however, two Mustangs still stood out:

- backup sophomore QB Allen Cheatham, known more for his quick feet and ability to run the option, came out throwing, including a 36 yarder to Adam Berry on a 3rd and 15 play, and later connecting with Berry again for a 19 yard TD pass.

- Berry had a great night. Pre-season tabbed as the top punter in metro Louisville despite laboring in the shadow of Bryce Webb last year (honorable mention all-state punter), Berry was phenomenal, punting for both hang time and distance. Would be absolutely shocked if this young man isn't punting for a college team soon. Berry also had a nice night on offense, snagging the two big passes mentioned above - both times using his 6'2" frame and outjumping a defender.

North is on a 15-game losing streak which started in 2015...the school record is 16.

On the other sideline, new Oldham County coach Mike Fox is looking for his first win after a loss to Henry County last week.

Oldham County, fresh off a dominating four-TD scrimmage victory over top 10 (4A) Shelby County, came back down to earth last Friday with a 20-14 overtime loss at Henry County. The Colonels had several chances to win this one in regulation, but mistakes and sometimes dumb bad luck bit OC. Three TDs were scored on one possession alone - and all were called back on penalties. Oldham just missed on a safety, and missed a field goal. Any of these probably put the game in the "W" column for the rebuilding Colonels, but in the end, Henry got a last-minute 75 yard drive for the tying TD and two point conversion to erase a 14-6 Oldham lead and force OT. The Wilcats scored on their first play in OT, and Oldham fumbled their first snap away to Henry County, giving the Wildcats a big opening day win.

Zach Young had a couple of highlight-reel catches for the Colonels.

North Oldham leads the series against Oldham County, 5-1, but the Colonels won last year's meeting in Goshen, 14-6.

Most of the primary players - statistically - in last year's matchup are graduated....but Jacob Ratliff had 13 total tackles last year for Oldham and Tanner McCoy - now the QB at North - scored North's only TD on a pass reception.

Who wins? Why?

The game will be broadcast live video beginning at 7 pm ET on The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN
