Vikings End Cardinals’ 5-Game Win Streak, 53-51

 

 

The Varsity Cardinals traveled to Rowan County last night for a matchup with one of the premier teams of the 16th Region. The Cardinals led, 17-5, following Ryan Cooper’s trey with 2:15 remaining in the first quarter. However, over the next 10+ minutes of the first half, the Cardinals would score only 9 more points. The Cardinals led, 18-9, after the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Will Philpot picked up his second foul; therefore, Coach Cook replaced him for the remainder of the first half.

 

Chase Taylor had 6 points in the first half. JJ Johnson had 5 points. The Cardinals led at halftime, 26-20.

JJ Johnson scored a bucket and Will Philpot scored twice to make the score, 32-22, with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter. Soon after, Ryan Cooper hit a trey to increase the lead to 11 at 35-24. However, Will Philpot picked up his third foul with 2:45 left in the third quarter and was replaced again. The Vikings tallied a run of 14-5 to close out the third quarter. The Cardinals led after 3 quarters, 40-38.

The Vikings took the lead on a key play in the fourth quarter following a mishandled rebound by two Cardinals. The ball eventually made its way to the perimeter for a trey to give Rowan County a lead at 45-43 with 5:35 remaining. Ryan Cooper hit a jump shot and Chase Taylor made 2 free throws to take the lead at 47-45 with 3:24 remaining. Will Philpot and Jordan Graham made baskets to tie the game at 51 with 1:30 remaining. There was no scoring until with 3.9 seconds left, the Vikings took an inbounds pass at the block. The bank shot made the score, 53-51, with 1.3 seconds remaining. The Cardinals were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer. The Cardinals win streak ends at 5 after the loss, 53-51. Ryan Cooper and Will Philpot had 7 points each and Jordan Graham had 6 points in the second half.

JJ Johnson (#31) had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.

Jehdon Jenkins (#20) had 4 points and 1 steal.

Ben Jackson (#25) had 2 points and 2 rebounds.

He had a big role in thei win. Nice player. Him and Woods play well together. Don't have his stats but he played well.
