Class 5A Notebook (8/21/16)

Featured Replies

What a great feeling it is for high school football to be back! The opening week in class 5A didn’t really hold any surprises as the teams that were expected to win did. The only loss from the top 10 was Covington Catholic’s 31-13 loss to 6A #8 Ryle, which was expected by most. Outside of the top 10, Fairdale was held scoreless to DeSales, losing 30-0. However there are some exciting games coming up this week that should tell us more about where some teams stand. Continue reading and you will hear more about those games and the opening week’s results.

Bowling Green opened the season as expected, with a lopsided win over 4A #4 John Hardin. The Purples won the game 48-22, with the Bulldogs tacking on a couple of late scores after the game was decided. The Purples offense may be even better this season than last season, if that’s possible. Mr. Football candidate Jamele Carrothers tallied 4td’s and 113 yards rushing, while QB Clarke Payne passed for 277 yards, adding 3 touchdowns of his own. While the Purples appear to be a dominate team in 5A once again, things don’t get any easier this week as Christian County comes to town.

Fern Creek opened the season against 6A Seneca, shutting out the Redhawks 33-0. This week however, will give the Tigers a huge test as they travel to 6A #7 Manual. While Manual held off Louisville Central in a close one (21-20) Fern Creek is hoping to solidify their spot at the top of the 5A “teams not named Bowling Green” rankings. If your able, get yourself to this game, it should be a battle.

Christian County knocked off 3A #5 Caldwell County in the opening week, with a final score of 50-34. Kolbe Langhi had a great start to the season, completing over 50% of his passes for 354 yards and 3 touchdowns. His top targets were Keyron Catlett with 8 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown and Ja’Quon Long with 6 catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns. The Colonels will face their toughest test of the year this week against class 5A favorite Bowling Green.

Highlands started off the season great, with a 52-42 win over 6A Cooper. While Highlands defense appears to be a work in progress, the offense is firing on all cylinders right out of the gate. The Bluebirds racked up over 360 yards on the ground, QB Brady Gosney helped balance the offense tacking on another 121 yards while completing 80% of his passes. This week Highlands takes a short road trip to take on the Camels of Campbell County.

Owensboro opened the season with a dominating win over Warren Central, winning 43-6. This isn’t the Warren Central that your used to, but it was still a great start to the season for the Red Devils. The Owensboro defense only allowed 43 yards total, all of which came on the ground. This week the Red Devils will face North Hopkins.

Covington Catholic was the only team in the top ten to open their season with a loss. However that loss came to a solid Ryle team that is ranked #6 in class 6A. The Raiders beat the Colonels in the season opener 31-13. I’m not sure there is any such thing as a good loss and losing your season opener is never good, but this certainly wasn’t a bad loss for the Colonels. That said, the schedule doesn’t let up over the next several weeks so the Colonels need to get things on track in a hurry. This week they travel across the pond to take on Oak Hill’s (Cincinnati) in what should be a close but winnable game.

Pulaski County opened the season with the Harlan County Black Bears. The Maroons won that game 26-14. While Harlan County is a formidable opponent, 6A #6 Scott County is on another level. The Cardinals put it on Tates Creek in the opening week, winning 47-20. This is by far the toughest game on Pulaski’s regular season schedule, if they can hang with the Cardinals then they will certainly be a contender in 5A.

South Oldham opened the season with a great win over a solid Anderson County team, winning that game 31-14. In that game the Dragons ran for over 270 yards, with Keaton Martin leading the way with 147 yards on only 15 attempts. This week will be a battle of the Dragons, as South Oldham travels to Louisville to face a Doss team that appears to be on the up and up. This game is intriguing, as it may set the tone for the season for both 5A squads. This is certainly a game keep an eye on for a possible upset this week.

Southwestern earned a win over Jeffersonville, Indiana in the opening week in a big way, winning the game 56-26. This week the Warriors head to Danville to take on a traditional powerhouse that had their way with Larue County last week, winning 47-13. As Southwestern is lurking behind Pulaski in their district, this will be a good opportunity for the Warriors to make a statement.

Greenwood, this Greenwood team is on the up and up. They opened the season with a 39-7 win over Warren East. The Gators racked up 340 rushing yards against the raiders. Expect more of the same this week as they travel to Allen County for their home opener. Allen County lost to Daviess county 20-12 in their season opener.
