People disgust me voting for people like that. Most sources say he abandoned the Klan in 1950-51, but still held segregationist beliefs well into the '60s and perhaps much later. I suppose it could be argued that in those earliest days, Klan membership was an asset to those with high political ambition in places such as West Virginia. It could also be argued that while Byrd has never been seen in the same virulently racist light as George Wallace, like Wallace, his late-life political career with regard to race issues could be seen as coming from a place of atonement for past sins. He's a troublesome character when you look at the whole picture.
