March 31, 201610 yr I'm issuing a Severe Weather Alert for today. The threat for severe weather has grown especially for western and south-central Kentucky. My main concern is for WKY. That is where the greatest chance for significant tornadoes to occur. The timing for the greatest tornado threat looks to be between 5-11 pm EDT for that area. We may see some showers and possible thunderstorms during the day but they should clear out by early afternoon. We could see some clearing of the skies and get some sunshine this afternoon. It is depending on how much sun we see which would cause more destabilization of the atmosphere. The main threats from the severe weather later this afternoon into the nighttime hours look to be damaging winds, severe hail, cloud to ground lightning and few tornadoes. Some of these tornadoes could be strong. Here are some maps from the NAM model showing the instability for this afternoon and later tonight. This event could last into early Friday morning for some of Kentucky so be weather aware today especially this evening and tonight. The following three maps show that the energy needed for the possible severe weather is there. 2 pm EDT 5 pm EDT 8 pm EDT Significant tornado threat 5 pm EDT 8 pm EDT 11 pm EDT
