Any teams going to camp this year?

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone's teams were going to any team camps this year? I know that Raceland has been to a "down and dirty" linemans camp at KCU and have been in a couple of those 7 on 7 passing tourneys. I am not sure when the "dead" period is where teams are not allowed to practice. Any way, was just wonering about "team" camps.

I believe that Raceland is leaving tonight at midnight for Troy University in Alabama. I think that team camps are good to bring a team together - get them away from friends, girlfriends, etc. for a week and concentrate on football. I was just told a few minutes ago that the dead period for Ky. h.s. football practice is from June 25 - July 9. IMO camp will be good for the team just that I don't think they can go full contact untill the week before school starts, not sure. I did not get a chance to talk with any of the coaches on this but I do believe that they are leaving tonight.

The dead period is always the last week of June and thru the following week of the 4th of July.

Teams can't go full equipment till after the dead period and can only do so 10 seperate times before the first game and also has to be with 15 days of the start of school I do believe. They can however use Helmets and shoulder pads. Somehow that is different from full pads. In todays day and age, where technique dictates that all blocks must be above the waist, I don't see a huge difference other than from a defensive point of view, and there again, technique dictates a hit and wrap above the waist. A lot of emphasis is put on the "full pads" practices, when they can begin, and how many, but personally I don't see the big deal. Not wearing pants and practicing in this day and age, is more of a benefit than a burden. Just my opinion.

I like the camps, and I agree with your thoughts, but most teams in my area don't go away to camp.

I can see your point and I tend to agree with you. I just came from an day when it was full pads / full contact or you were not practicing.  A lot can get done w/o the full pads for sure. I believe that this is the first time in about 3 or 4 years that Raceland had went away to a team camp. The past couple of years or so they have had their "camp" week at the school, the players stay at the school, sleep on cots in the clubhouse and do not leave. The booster club and others bring their meals in.This worked out fairly well - I just like the idea of coaches getting a team away from things and to themselves to bond as a team.

Just so I don't misinform anyone here is the exact set of rules.

Sec. 5) Sports Specific Limitations - Football - Boys

(1)

Organized non-contact practice shall not begin prior

to July 15. During this non-contact period, a helmet,

shoulder pads and shoes are the only football

equipment that may be worn. The first date of

practice in full pads shall be the earlier of seven (7)

week days (not counting Saturdays and Sundays) prior

to the opening day of school (which shall be defined as

the day prior to the classes starting for the student

body) or August 1 but under no circumstances can be

prior to the fourth Friday before the first regular

season playing date. After contact practice (practice

in pads) has begun and prior to the first day of classes

for the students, no school may conduct multiple on-

field practice sessions in pads (e.g., two-a-days or

three-a-days) on consecutive days (e.g., two-one two-

one format). After the opening day of the school year,

no school may conduct multiple on-field practice

sessions in pads (e.g., two-a-days or three-a-days) on

a day in which school is in session. All schools shall

submit all required documentation to verify the proper

execution of the practice regulations, including

scrimmage, contact, and heat/safety regulations and

recommendations.

(2)

There shall be no more than two (2) scrimmages

or practice games per member school (grades 9-12)

prior to the opening varsity game of the season with

players other than members of the squad.

(3) The first game shall not take place prior to eleven

(11) weekends prior to the weekend of the first round

of the state playoffs.

(4)

A maximum of ten (10) regular season games may

be played.

(5)

The opportunity to participate in regular season

contests ends at all levels of play (grades 9-12) on

the Saturday preceding the first KHSAA Tournament

(District, Region or State), with the exception that the

varsity team may practice and play through its

elimination from KHSAA sanctioned tournament play.

Following elimination, there shall be no further practice

or play during the remainder of the academic school

year.

(6)

Each player, in order to be eligible to participate

against another school, shall have taken part in a

minimum of ten (10) practice periods extending over a

period of ten (10) days during the preceding three

weeks.

(7)

Every player must have five (5) days of practice

without pads to become acclimated to heat conditions

immediately prior to the first day of practice in pads.

(8)

Each football school may conduct ten (10) practice

periods of not more than two (2) hours in length and

not more than one practice per day over ten (10)

days during the three calendar school weeks following

the school’s elimination from post-season play in

basketball. All equipment authorized by the football

playing rules may be used during this period. There

can be no inter-school competition during this period,

and all participants must be eligible according to all

KHSAA eligibility rules.
