It was an epic battle tonight in the Fort, as these two rivals took to the court, and gave the full house crowd their monies worth. Both schools had respectable student sections on hand for this one, which is to be expected when it's anything NewCath/Highlands.

 

I was really impressed with the Highlands back row, as they came up big just about everytime the Breds hammered one across the nets.....Good job ladies. :ylsuper:

 

Both teams had their share of unforced errors, and NewCath looked out of sync most of the night for whatever reason, but the Breds came up big when it counted to get the win.

 

Game 1 - Highlands looked like they were going to take this one as they raced out to leads of 5-2, 9-5, & 13-7. However, the Breds closed the gap at 13-12, before the Birds would go up 15-12. NewCath then gains momentum and gets it 1st lead at 17-16 and doesn't look back. They are up 24-21 with the serve, but the serve goes out of bounds and the Birds mount a comeback and draw within one at 24-23. However, on the perfect set from Mikah Freppon, Rachel McDonald says, "na baby na", and sends a "laserbeam" across to the Highlands side for the winner, 25-23.

 

Game 2 - This one was back and forth until the Breds gain a 9-6 advantage. They could never push it to a 4pt. spread, as they had leads of 12-9, 15-12,& 19-16. Highlands then goes on the 4pt run to take a 20-19 lead. Following a NewCath timeout, the Breds go on a 6 pt. run to close out the the set at 25-20.

 

Game 3 - Breds hold a 4-3 lead, but that soon vanishes, as the Birds go up 8-5 & 10-7. NewCath pulls within 1 at 11-10, but Highlands takes 3pt leads at 14-11, 16-13, & 18-15. NewCath quickly puts up 3 in a row to tie things up at 18's, but just like that Highlands goes back up 3 at 21-18 & 23-20. The Birds are up 24-21 with the serve, but can't capitalize, and Breds pull within one at 24-23. However, a spike out of bounds by NewCath give the Birds the 25-23 win.

 

Game 4 - NewCath looked totally lost out on the floor, but in their defense, Highlands was on FIRE and could do no wrong The Birds take leads of 10-5, 15-7, & 19-10....before the final of 25-15.

 

Game 5 - NewCath held the lead from the get go in this one. Up 7-3 and 9-6, before the Birds chip away an draw within one, at 9-8. After a Highlands timeout and the Breds up 12-9, NewCath scores the next 3 to send the visiting fans home with a smile............and a sigh of relief.

 

I really enjoy watching Mikah Freppon play for the simple fact that she dives all over the place for balls. I know there are other players that do other things just as well, but lying out all over the floor just sticks out for me.

 

The Breds are at home up on the "hill" tomorrow against the Cooper Jaguars.
