Covington Catholic 1 Trinity 1

Well played game by two high level teams. CovCath really controlled the 1st half, and probably were disappointed not to have more than a 1 goal lead. I would say the first 10 or so minutes of the 2nd half were even, but Trinity definitely dominated the last 25 to 30 minutes. If not for two HUGE saves by Romes, Trinity would have gotten the result they wanted.

Day is so good and so smooth, every touch is subtle, but positive. Stays so calm and composed. I love watching him.

Also will add that #19 (Massie I think) is a beast on throw-ins. Such a weapon. I say that now because his toss into the box created their only goal, but that they are consistently 35 yards and on target.

CovCath won the JV 4-2, although the Rocks led 2-1 at half. Two very, very nice JV sides.

Pretty accurate description. CCH was up 1-0 at half but missed two point blank chances as well that really need to be in the net in a game like this. Trinity had no shots on goal in the first half that was controlled by CCH. The thing that stuck out to me in the first half was 1) CCH was much faster and athletic overall than Trinity as a team. 2) CCH used 12 players total, which ended up being a mistake.

Second half, I would agree it was even at the beginning. Trinity had more fire overall. As the half wore on, Trinity had the better of the play as CCH seemed to sit on the lead and fatigue set in. 12 players total used by CCH the entire game and they were gassed at the end, with plenty of depth on the bench. Romes came up big with some saves as noted. The Colonels had their chances in the first half to put a couple more in the net and really put the game out of reach but didn't do it.

I've been hoping they'd narrow the lineup a bit but 12 players on a warm evening............that was a stretch. Good game overall. CCH is right there but needs to sharpen the edge a bit to finish the job.

And I'd also agree that the JV game was as high level as you will see. Both of those teams would beat a large percentage of varsity teams.

Two high level , possession teams, went at it tonight. Good match on a beautiful night to watch a game. Safe travels to Trinity on the ride home.

Can't help but think that if Wessels was available it would have made a different....at least in spelling a few of the CCH players......only 12 players played for CCH.

Anyway.....I think both coaches learned a lot about their teams.

It's possible the 12 player lineup was by design to hide the depth for later in the year but who knows. #16 would have turned the tide in the middle in my opinion for CCH tonight.

Entertaining match and a fair result. No way of knowing why CCH only played 12 players especially when they obviously looked fatigued mid way through the second half, would guess this was done for a reason. CCH missing a few important players that most likely would have made the difference, but then Trinity may have been missing some important pieces as well. It will be interesting to watch how both teams progress through the season and where they go from here. When CCH gets to full strength they will be tough to beat in the 9th region. These two teams could well meet again this season.

Agree the JV game was high level, CCH was clearly the better team in this one. But if they play 10 times it could easily go 5 and 5. A few JV players on both sides would be starting varsity for many, many schools. Price they pay to attend great schools, their patience and decision to attend these schools will be rewarded in many ways. CCH has a really good core of sophomores and freshmen in the pipeline, they will be a top contender for at least the next 3-4 years.

I wasn't keeping a book, and in the grand scheme it doesn't matter, but didn't they sub a kid in for 12 at left mid in the 1st half and a different kid for Massie at left back when he cramped? I guess it may have been the same sub (hence the 12), but I thought it was two different kids. Either way, the point remains the same.

Same sub. Thieman dropped from midfield to cover Massie's spot when he cramped up and they put Jacobs in at the midfield spot. The midfield was completely out of gas at the end and could have used a couple breaks.

Also failed to mention the large crowd. Alumni night, although not greatly advertised, but very large crowd saw a great game on the new field.......

Also.....not the best officiating when it came to goal kicks vs corners and whose throw in it was........imo Trinity had at least 3 that I would have agreed with, CCH 2.......sun was tough but I can count 4 times when the call should have probably gone the other way..........with that said....I wasn't on the field, just 4 rows away from it

....

We've had that Center in both U10 and U11 games, and he was clearly not up to it last night. Badly botched a call in the Southeast corner in the 1st half that should have been a CovCath corner and he awarded a Trinity goal kick.

......and to be fair, down the stretch the ar on the side that the benches were on gave CCH a goal kick when it was clearly a corner for Trinity.....

Yep.
