May 26, 201511 yr All Florida Region. 1. Florida 2. FAU 3. USF 4. Florida A&M It's the first appearance by USF in a regional since 2002. Considering what 1st year Head Coach Mark Kingston had to work with, he's exceeded expectations by a huge amount. All the Bulls have to do to win a game is put up a few runs and get from the starter to Tommy Peterson, their closer, without having an implosion (aka keep the middle relief on the bench). Starters Jimmy Herget and Casey Mulholland are capable of doing that, after that God help them. USF swept FAMU in Tampa early in the season. Florida swept USF in their home and home games.
May 30, 201511 yr Author Went as I said it could. Jimmy Herget gave up 2 runs in the 1st, 1 in the third, got a little run support and stayed FAU from then through the 7th, then he handed it off to Tommy Peterson to nail the coffin shut. USF 5 FAU 3 The Bulls will face Florida, next. The Gators killed FAMU 19-0.
May 31, 201511 yr Author Florida beat USF 8-2. USF Head Coach, Mark Kingston, did not send his #2 to the mound in this one. Instead, he sent one of the Sunday pitchers, Ryan Valdez. Valdez hung in there for 6 innings, but gave up 5 runs. Tommy Eveld got them to the 9th. I got a little excited when the Bulls got one back in the eighth. However, when I saw Jordan Strittmatter come out to pitch the ninth, I knew nothing good was going to happen. Every game I've seen him pitch in this year has been a disaster. Sure enough, he gave up 3 more runs. The Bulls collected 10 hits off Gator pitching, which is a good sign, but they stranded a boat load. Can't do that in a regional. I can only figure Kingston hoped Valdez and the pen could eek out a win over the Gators getting the Bulls into a position to possibly close out the regional with Casey Mulholland and maybe having Herget pitch on 2 days rest. Instead, Mulholland will face FAU in an elimination game tomorrow morning. FAU eliminated FAMU 8-1 earlier today. Should USF get by FAU, it should be interesting to see how Kingston plays his cards.
May 31, 201511 yr Author It was 4-2 going into the 6th when Casey Mulholland allowed a single, walked the next 2 FAU batters to load the bases, then gave up a grand slam. Mike Farley took over in the 7th and allowed 2 more for the final total. FAU 8 USF 4. It was a great season, considering. I look forward to next year.
