37th District Tournament Preview

The Campbell County Middle School is again the site for the 37th District Tournament, where Brad Carr's Scott Eagles are the top-seed. Campbell County, the defending District and Regional champs, claimed the #2 seed and will square off with bitter rival Bishop Brossart, the #3 seed. Silver Grove and Calvary Christian find themselves in familiar positions as the #4 and #5 seeds, respectively. The 37th is typically a dog-fight, and we don't expect that to change in 2015.

Scott went through the regular season undefeated in district play, thanks in large part to the sensational play of 5'11" sophomore Jake Ohmer, whose 22.2 ppg leads the team. Senior Blake Schneider (14.8 ppg), also at 5'11", joins Ohmer and the two form one of the 10th's deadliest backcourts. Schneider missed 9 of the team's 26 games with various injuries and missed the last two with a bad ankle, but the Eagles are hopeful that Schneider will play in the tournament. Andrew Trame adds to the backcourt firepower with 11 ppg. The 6'0 junior drained a team-high 56 3-pointers during the regular season. Carr's team should return to the 10th Region Tournament after a rare year away in 2014.

Campbell County entered the 2014-15 season favored by many to repeat as 37th District and 10th Region champions. Things have not gone as planned, however, thanks to a key injury, plus inconsistent play throughout the year. The Camels are led in scoring by 6'3" senior wing Deondre Jackson, who averages 17.9 ppg. Junior big man Matt Wilson, at 6'8", missed a half-dozen games with an ankle issue, and scores 14 ppg, while grabbing 10.8 rpg. Senior guard Blake Losey averages 12.5 ppg and came on strong to end the regular season. Aric Russell hopes to rally his team, as he was able to do a season ago, and make a strong postseason run.

Mike Code brings his Bishop Brossart Mustangs into the tournament having won 5 of 7 games (as of this writing). Three Mustangs average between 11 and 12 ppg, starting with 6'1" senior forward Jonathan Zink (11.8 ppg & 7 rpg). Jackson Crawford, a 6'3" junior, scores 11.5 ppg & grabs 5.2 rpg. Senior wing Spencer Hackworth averages 11.2 ppg and does most of his damage beyond the arc, draining 57 3-pointers in the regular season. The Mustangs lost to Campbell County in the regular season 52-50, but both squads were missing key personnel.

Silver Grove has enjoyed a pretty decent regular season under first-year head coach Howard Brownstein. The Big Trains sit at 13-13 as of this writing and are led in scoring by senior Christian Pollitt and his 13.1 ppg. Junior guard Randy Kuntz averages 12 ppg and back court mate Anthony Turicos, a 5'9" senior, averages 11.8 ppg. Senior forward Billy Miller averages 9.3 ppg, but pulls down an even 10 rpg.

Chris Douthitt's Calvary Christian squad was winless in the regular season 37th District slate. The Cougars have managed just 3 wins in 25 games, but the team has received some solid play from a pair of sophomore guards: Aikeem Riley (14.5 ppg) and Justin Wade (11.8 ppg). Senior center Zac Valandra provides the team with veteran leadership at 9.2 ppg and a team-high 6.3 rpg.
