Newport Central Catholic 75 Conner 50

The Breds spoil Senior Night in Hebron as they roll past the Cougars. NewCath took the lead for good with only 10 seconds off the clock, as Zach Pangallo drops one of his patented "floaters" from 15 feet, and the route was on. From there it was a dominating 30-6 1st quarter lead. Conner came to life in the 2nd quarter with a combination of Newcath starters on the bench and scored 20 in the quarter, but the Breds almost kept pace tallying 14. NewCath extended the lead to 30 at the 3rd quarter horn. less than 30 seconds into the 4th the Breds had their largest margin at 67-34, and a bucket from the "running clock", but Jacob Barnes and Malek Scott prevent it from happening.

Zach Pangallo was ON FIRE (6/8 3pt), in the 1st 3:15 he had already hit double figures, with 12 points. He went for 8 more in the time he was on the floor in the 2nd quarter and hit 2 more 3's in limited 3rd quarter action to finish with a game high 26:eek:!!! Drew McDonald also hit double figures in the 1st quarter going for 10, and finished with 19. Ben Weyer also finished in double figures going for 12 on the night, with the usual assortment of blocks and boards.

The Conner duo of Scott and Barnes did a nice job of trying to keep things respectable for the Cougars, but the Breds were just too much

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds concluded the impressive regular season with a convincing 75-50 win at Conner on Thursday.

NewCath (26-3 overall) finished the regular season with a 17-1 record against 9th Region opponents and a third straight All “A” State championship. NewCath’s only region loss came to defending state champion Covington Catholic on Jan. 15.

The Thoroughbreds have won 15 straight since then. The Thoroughbreds enter the postseason aiming for their seventh straight district tournament championship and first region title since 2000.

The Cougars (12-14) could not stop the top three scorers for the Thoroughbreds. Senior point guard Zack Pangallo made seven three-pointers on his way to 27 points. NewCath posts Drew McDonald and Fort Thomas resident Ben Weyer scored 20 and 10 respectively.

Jacob Barnes led Conner with 17 points. Michael Scott followed with nine.

The Thoroughbreds earned the top seed in the 36th District Tournament and take on either Highlands or Dayton in the semifinals on Wednesday at Newport. Game time is 6 p.m.
