47th District Tournament at Pulaski County

Pulaski County Maroons (17-11) (5-1) - Pulaski County is on a roll when it comes to 47th District Tournaments. They have won the last five district titles and have won eight of the last nine 47th District Tournaments since the new alignment in 2006. They are once again poised to win another title sitting as the #1 seed in this year’s 47th District Tournament which is being played on their home court. The Maroons face #4 seed Rockcastle County whom they beat both times they played this season.

Rockcastle County Rockets (10-15) (2-4) – Rockcastle County lost the coin flip with Casey County which made them the #4 seed and play #1 seed Pulaski County. The Rockets have struggled lately losing four of the last five regular season games including a 46-63 loss to Pulaski County. The Rockets need to regroup if they plan on advancing to the 12th Region Tournament by getting by Pulaski County. This is the only #4 seed that I can see pulling the upset over a #1 seed in the 12th region. It’s only a slim chance, but if they play like they are capable of playing, the upset is theirs to take.

Somerset Briar Jumpers (13-12) (3-3) – Somerset was upset last year in the first round of the 47th District Tournament by Casey County and these two teams will once again be facing each other in the district elimination game. #2 seed Somerset beat #3 seed Casey County both times they played this year but both games were very close and could have gone either way. This game should be the closest game in the first round of district play throughout the 12th Region.

Casey County Rebels (11-18) (2-4) – Casey County won the coin flip with Rockcastle County which game them the #3 seed and face #2 seed Somerset in the first round. The Rebels have played a tough regular season schedule which has prepared them for the post season. Look for this to be a potential first round upset.

Potential 47th District Championship game match-up:

This is the most difficult district championship game to pick in the 12th Region. All four teams are capable of winning their first round game and getting to the championship on Friday night. I give Pulaski County the edge over Rockcastle County, but Somerset and Casey County are two very equal teams. If Pulaski County plays Somerset, look for a cross town rivalry atmosphere with a game that will be fun to watch. If Casey County gets by Somerset in the first round, don’t be surprised to see them cutting down the nets Friday night and claiming the district title.

They changed the times this afternoon. The games were originally scheduled for Tuesday, but the powers that be changed the girls first round games to Wednesday and the boys to Thursday. The championship game is still Friday.
