Inside 14th Region (1/31/15)

Featured Replies

The 9th week of the 2014/15 basketball season has came and went. Their was some teams that continued to roll while others skid/winning streaks continued and some teams beat other teams on their home floor in a long while. Let’s take a look back at week 9 throughout the 14th region.

Knott County Central extends winning streak to 12 straight, locks up #1 seed in district tournament

The Patriots played 3 games in just 4 days, one of those games was on the road against district foe, Letcher County Central. Knott needing to win to lock up the 1 seed while Letcher Central looking to pull a major upset. An upset would not happen on this night as Knott Central would defeat the Cougars 69-45 to lockup the #1 seed in the district tournament.

The Patriots would have Thursday off but would return to action on Friday night when they would travel to Jackson to take on the Breathitt County Bobcats. This one would not be pretty as the Patriots would roll to a 86-45 victory. The Patriots had 2 players that were in double figures in the scoring column, Camron Justice with 28 and Evan Hall with 12.

Knott County Central would return home on Saturday to host the Belfry Pirates from the 16th region. Belfry would come in with a record of 5-13 which would go to 5-14 as the Patriots would roll on to another big victory 94-58. After 2 minutes in, just 2 minutes, Knott County Central led 13-0. Camron Justice led the Patriots with 30.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/3 @ Perry County Central, 2/5 Jenkins

Perry County Central defeats Lawrence County, improves to 18-6

The Commodores had just two games last week, Wolfe County and Lawrence County in the Kentucky Prep Showcase at Jackson City and other various locations.

Wolfe County made the trip up to Hazard to take on The Commodores. This game would get out of hand fast as everyone for both teams would get to play as the Perry Central Commodores rolled to a 89-38 win.

Perry County Central would be paired with Lawrence County in the KY Prep Showcase on Saturday. Perry County Central would win 63-52. With the both wins, the Commodores improve to 18-6 and extend their winning streak to 6 straight games.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/3 Knott County Central, 2/6 Hazard, 2/7 @ Lafayette

Buckhorn has a good showing in the All “A” State Tournament even though they went 1-1

After winning the 14th Region All “A” Classic, the Buckhorn Wildcats found themselves playing the All “A” State Tournament down in Frankfort at the Civic Center.

Buckhorn would face off against University Heights who won the 2nd Region All “A” Classic. In what would be a thrilling game, Buckhorn would defeat the Blazers 55-51 behind junior guard Connor Hoskins 22 point performance.

Buckhorn would advance to face Lexington Christian, these two last meet on December 30 2011 down in Windermere Prep FL with LCA winning 63-49. This game would not be the game for Buckhorn has LCA would roll past the Wildcats 53-35.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/3 @ Estill County, 2/7 Letcher County Central

Engineers continue to be hot, despite falling to Lewis County 71-61

The Engineers took a 6 game win streak to Richmond on Monday to face off against the Model Patriots on the Patriots home floor, a place that Estill County hasn’t won at since December 7th, 2004. That streak would come to an end as Estill County would defeat the Patriots 48-41.

After defeating Model, the Engineers would travel to Lewis County, on the very next night, to face the Lewis County Lions, the same team that defeated Estill County 55-47 in the Berea Invitational Tournament back last month. This time around, it would be the same result just different score as Lewis County would defeat the Engineers 71-61.

Estill County would head to Booneville on Friday night for a big boy/girl district double header with a lot on the line for both teams and both games. If Estill County won they would have the 1 seed locked up for the district tournament, Owsley County would be looking to upset the Engineers and change things. This would be a dandy of a game…………in the first half, both teams would be tied 12-12 at the end of the 1 and 25-25 at halftime but the 3rd quarter is what done the job as Estill County would outscore the Owls 15-2 in that quarter on their way to a 60-48 victory and locking down the 1 seed for the district tournament. Engineers were led in scoring by freshmen Caleb Bonny who finished with 18, 13 of that came in the first half.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/3 vs. Buckhorn, 2/6 vs. Lee County

Letcher County Central falls to Knott County Central but rallies off 2 straight wins

Letcher County Central would face off against highly rated and district foe, Knott County Central on Wednesday. This game would be closer than the first go around but the same result would still stand, Knott County Central 69-45 over the Cougars.

Letcher County Central would make their way to Jenkins to face off against the Cavaliers in another district game and much like the first meeting between the two, the Cougars would defeat the Cavaliers 85-59 to improve to 3-3 in district play and 12-8 overall.

Letcher County Central picked up a home game against Knox Central for Saturday. This game would be one of the best games of the week in the 14th region as Letcher Central would edge Knox Central 80-74.

Upcoming Games: 2/3 Hazard, 2/6 @ Union VA, 2/7 @ Buckhorn
