MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK: Baker, Beach, Baker, Cats

A dozen seasons after Al Baker amassed 1,097 yards of offense and 12 touchdowns for Kentucky in 1990, Arliss Beach arrived in Lexington.

 

Fourteen years after Beach switched out Ashland maroon for Kentucky blue in 2002, Quinton Baker — Al’s son — will follow suit.

 

The Tomcats’ junior running back verbally committed to the University of Kentucky on Saturday.

 

Donning the same number as Beach wore at UK, “Q” has left few questions as to whether he’s a Division-I runner.

 

The shifty, elusive Baker has unpredictable explosiveness. His sly spin move might as well be patented.

 

Now, is he SEC quality? The Wildcats sure think so. They offered the three-star recruit this past spring.

 

“I’ve known from Day 1 that I was going to end up at UK,” Baker said on Sunday. “I just knew it was the place I wanted to play at. The whole time during the recruiting process, they’ve made me feel really welcome.”

 

Baker said Saturday’s visit was his third or fourth on campus. He witnessed the Wildcats’ valiant effort, albeit a losing one, against No. 1 Mississippi State.

I think it's awesome he will be going to UK!! The question I have is, especially if D Harris chooses UK, how much playing time, if any, does he expect to get?

Good question. Baker is a junior, so he will be one year behind Harris. Plus, I would be really surprised if they don't red shirt Baker to get some more muscle mass on him. I kind of doubt they will red shirt Harris. That will put Baker two years behind Harris.

 

Plus, it seems like it is more RB by committee anymore, not just a three down back.
