AARON SNYDER: Teams share classy action

Aaron Snyder / The Independent

There are always seemingly a thousand different directions this column can go.

The Monday Morning Quarterback could unleash his thoughts about two great talents who each had a 99-yard rushing touchdown on the same night — Ashland’s Quinton Baker and Paintsville’s Kash Daniel accomplished a rare feat for the area, to be sure. My professional opinion? They’re really good at football.

Or, he could present the readers with a bit of trivia, such as, when was the last time Russell churned out a 200-yard rushing performance by two different players in the same season, just as Nick Conley and Jacob McKee have achieved? The answer? Well … do you know?

However, upon further discovery, something else uniquely and firmly towered above other storylines from Friday night.

Just a few weeks after the school made clear that coach Ray Graham could no longer lead the team in prayer prior to games, according to the law, the Rowan County Vikings took it upon themselves to meet Boyd County’s team on the 50-yard line before kickoff of Friday’s game at Paul Ousley Field.

The purpose? To kneel together with schoolmates of Victory Bryant in tribute to the Boyd County senior who tragically lost her life late last Monday night while walking home from work.

Both teams prayed in unison moments before dividing up to compete against one another.

Whether or not you believe in prayer, this compassionate act speaks volumes for the youth of our area.

Both Rowan County and Boyd County showed sportsmanship, respect and class as a few true teenage leaders took it upon themselves to stop the game clock for just a few minutes to remind everyone that we can all dress for the same team.
