Collins Notebook 10-1-14

Featured Replies

Even though they were playing an overmatched opponent, it was great to see the Collins offense finally get going last Friday night, putting up 51 points against Atherton, including 37 in the first half. Freshman Nasean Roseberry, a future star for the Titans, ran for 123 yards on 8 carries and scored his second touchdown of the year. Fellow freshman JR Lucas rushed for 11 yards and passed for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns after replacing Browning Becherer, who threw for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns. EJ Burk was the top receiver as he has been all year, catching 4 passes for 103 yards and 4 touchdowns. Collins defense continued to play very well, giving up just 53 total yards. Freshmen Jay Becherer and Nick Eades lead the Titans with 5 tackles a piece.

While it was great to see Collins put up so many points last week and get a lot of young kids some playing time, this week’s opponent poses a much tougher challenge. The Spencer County Bears will come to town Friday night fresh off a 21-13 victory over district opponent North Oldham, who many considered to be the top candidate to finally knock the Titans off their district throne. However, Spencer County was able to defeat the Mustangs behind 284 rushing yards from junior Logan Holbrook and solid play from their defense. Because of their win over North Oldham, the Bears could all but guarantee themselves their first ever district title with a win over Collins Friday night.

Spencer County has always played Collins close, powered by a physical run first offense that controls the clock and a tough defense. This year the Bears are no different, piling up 1,202 rushing yards through 5 games (really only 4 though due to only playing 6 minutes in their win over Thomas Nelson). Logan Holbrook is their leading rusher with over 718 yards, an average of 150 per game. Spencer County doesn’t throw the ball much but when they do Kynan Smith is a big threat with his speed. Defensively the Bears have been led by senior linebacker Trenton Calvert and sophomore linebacker Hunter Brown, who lead the team with 35 tackles each.

It’s no secret that Friday night is a huge game for both teams. For Spencer County, they have never beaten Collins or won a district championship, and they can kill two birds with one stone with a win Friday night. Back to back wins over North Oldham and Collins would likely propel the Bears on a long winning streak into the playoffs. For Collins, after getting off to a slow start the Titans have won 2 in a row and a win over a district rival on homecoming night would be a big momentum builder for the Titans and put them in the driver’s seat to win the district. Spencer County always travels very well and Friday night is homecoming for the Titans. This will make for an electric atmosphere and a very exciting football game in front of a packed house under the lights at Titan Stadium. I have no clue who will win or how the game will go, but one thing is for sure – you won’t want to miss it.
