The Independent: Lawrence gets key stops in win over Fairview

Lawrence gets key stops in 29-25 win over Fairview

By AARON SNYDER The Independent

WESTWOOD Lawrence County junior Cole Mosley prefers to refer to the Bulldogs as the “junkyard dogs” when the defense is in dire need of a stop.

The nickname may stick considering how well the Dawgs defended their territory with their backs planted firmly against the wall on Friday.

Lawrence County denied Fairview four key scoring chances as it held on for a 29-25 victory at Fairview Stadium.

“There are seven different things we talk about every week, and playing great in goal-line situations is one of them,” said Lawrence County coach Joe Cecil. “It gets a little bit tougher when (the opponent) is that close, and we were proud of them for coming through tonight.”

Lawrence County held tight to the four-point lead as it converted a pair of first downs with its ground attack in the waning moments. Quarterback Grant Kiser and Mosley, a fullback, combined for 263 of Lawrence County’s 299 rushing yards. Kiser led all rushers with 154 yards on 16 carries.

Mosley credited the experienced offensive linemen, all of whom equally pleased Cecil.

“The front line is amazing,” Mosley said. “They don’t get as much respect as they should.”

As 6-foot-3, 300-pound senior lineman Michael Johnson pumped up the crowd with an arm wave and a booming shout during a break in fourth-quarter action, Bulldog fans released the tension of the game with a boisterous cheer.

“Tough game,” Cecil said. “Gotta give Fairview credit.”
