I know there was a thread about youth camps recently so I thought I'd share this.

 

Belfry hosts 2 FREE camps for the young guys, a 2 day camp for 5-8th graders and a 1 day camp for 1-4th graders.

 

The focus is on participation, having fun, and learning some fundamentals. The BHS coaches and players are the drill instructors.

“This is a good working group. There are some pretty athletic kids out here,” Haywood said of the campers. “We have had a lot of fun with them.”

 

 

“It is great to see the interest level,” the Pirate mentor said. “Especially with a long school year. We have good numbers and there is a number of good athletes out here that will be coming up.”

 

 

Haywood said there is a lot of interest shown from the younger generation and that he is pleased with the turnout.

 

 

“We are glad to be out here working with them,” Haywood added.

 

 

The BHS coaching staff runs the kids through different fundamental drills. Most are excited to be out on the same turf that the high school players perform on.

 

 

The youngsters look up to the older players as their local heroes.

 

 

“This is a great chance to work with them and give something back to the community,” Haywood concluded. “We have great support and this is one way we can give back to the community without charging a big fee.”

You may read over this little article and yawn, but things like this really make a difference in a community like Belfry. Sometimes it is the little things that make a difference for a kid and his parents. This is a great way to build up some goodwill and grow interest among your future talent pool.

 

Coach Haywood also takes some of his football players into the elementary schools to routinely talk to students, especially kids who are having discipline issues and other struggles, to help mentor them and try and encourage them to take the right path. It makes a difference.

Having dealt with Belfry the last few years (more on the MS side of things) I can attest they do things right, and the community is one of the most supportive Ive ever seen.

It is a special place, plantman. I can't begin to describe just how supportive this community is and just how well everyone works together for the good of the program. Everyone from the coaching staff, administration, students, parents, business community and fans, all working together to form the "Family" that is Belfry Football.

 

They embody the slogan "It's not about me, it's not about you, it's about US!"
