47th District Tournament Preview

6:30pm Pulaski County Maroons vs. Rockcastle County Rockets

The 47th District Tournament begins this Thursday night at Casey Co. with the first game pairing the #1 seed Pulaski County Maroons (15-12) (5-1) taking on the #4 seed Rockcastle Rockets (12-17) (2-4). The Maroons beat Rockcastle in both their meetings Pulaski is coached by Al Gover in his 5th season. Coach Gover has never lost a district tournament game since he took over the reigns of the Maroons in 2009. In actuality, the Maroons have won all but one district championship since this 47th district alignment was formed in 2005. Pulaski is lead by junior PF Sean Ross and freshman PG Payton Gover.

Coach Benny Blanton and the Rockets have a tough task ahead in beating the perennial district champs, but if there was a year to do that this would be the year. Although both teams are fairly young, Rockcastle brings more experience which can be a big plus in the post season. Rockcastle County would love to pull the upset and beat the Maroons, but to do that the Rockets will need big games from junior PG Sam Pensol and freshman C Lucas Gentry.

The winner of this game will advance to the 47th District finals on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 7:30.

8:00pm Somerset Briar Jumpers vs Casey County Rebels

The second game of the night pairs the #2 seed Somerset Briar Jumpers (13-14) (3-3) vs. the host team and #3 seed Casey County Rebels (11-19) (2-4). Somerset has struggled to get post season wins over the past few years but last year they put it all together and fought all the way to become 12th Region runner-up. This year coach Jeff Cothron will have the Jumpers hungry to return to the region but that means they must get by the Rebels of Casey County to get there. Somerset is led by senior Ryan Dishman. Dishman and his brother junior Tyler Dishman will need big games to get by the Rebels.

Casey County lost both meeting with the Jumpers earlier this year, but first year coach Maze Stallworth will have this young Rebels team ready for post season action. If the Jumpers overlook Casey, the Rebels could get the upset on their home court. For that to happen senior F Baylen Hill and freshman PG Colin Miller will need to rise to the occasion.

The winner of this game will advance to the 47th District finals on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 7:30.

Thanks PP! I like Somerset and Pulaski too, but Stallworth is a good coach and will be prepared for Somerset. Also, with the district being played at Casey there is a chance for an upset.

Pulaski started the season strong but has not performed as well near the end of the season. The loss to Casey Co. a few weeks ago made me realize anyone can win this district.
