Before the season started many questions were being asked by many NewCath football fans, the two most spoken, who replaces Josh Cain at QB? & who replaces the “hard hitting” Brady Thacker on defense? Well, everyone knows Mac Franzen and Jack Sutkamp filled both these rolls so well, now the question for 2014 is, who replaces them????? Those questions have time for an answer, as the 2014 Breds return a very nice group of players, including starters So. Maleek Lawrence OL/DL, So. Luke Kues WR/DE, So. Jake Smith RB/DB, So. Kobe Tallon WB/LB, Jr. Nate Enslen WR/DB, Jr. Colin Hoover OL/DL, Jr. Brandon Gray WR/DB, Jr. Logan Neff OL/DL, Jr. Jacob Wieland OL/DL.

 

When it comes to football up on the “hill”, since 2000, when they hit the field in the heat of July, NewCath footballers expect to be playing for a state championship in the cold of December. The 2013 version of the Newport Catholic Thoroughbreds was no exception. They battled through the usual tough non-district part of the schedule, cruised through their district schedule & the 1st 3 rounds of the playoffs, and “survived” in 2OT’s against a great Somerset team. In State Finals they gave a great effort against a VERY, VERY good DeSales team came up short in the end.

A special "shout-out" to a few players.

 

Mac Franzen, NewCath’s leading receiver in 2012 (59-1143-8), stepped into the role of QB for the 1st time since he was the “signal caller” his freshman year, and after some “growing pains” turned in one of the best seasons of any NewCath QB in history. He currently ranks 3rd in completions (143), 4th in yards (2309), 2nd in TD passes (27) in a season. He also had 568 rushing yards and 6 TD’s, CONGRATS McKinley on a fantastic year.

 

Jack Sutkamp just followed in the footsteps of his father (Jon) and uncles (Mike, Charlie, & Ben), and made a name for himself in NKY football history. The “hard hitting” linebacker for the 2nd consecutive season lead the Breds in tackles and also set the NewCath single season record with 209.5 (133 solo), and finishes his career with 330.5, good for 6th all-time.

 

Tommy Donnelly turned in one hell of a season after missing virtually the entire 2012 season; he broke his leg on the 1st play of the 2012 season. He finishes the year with 42 catches for 837 yards and 11 TD’s, his 203 receiving yards against DeSales set a NewCath single-game record, breaking Adam Reedy's mark of 187 set in 1990 against Danville.

 

Tylor Lyon will forever be known in NewCath history for his game winning catch in the closing seconds of the 2012 title game. On the offensive side of the ball, the 6’5” TE was primarily used to block or clear a path for the RB’s, however when thrown to he was “money” more times than not. Whether it was a big 1st down catch or in the endzone for a score you could count on Tyler, 12 career catches with 5 for TD’s. On the defensive end side, Tyler was responsible for 224 career tackles, 7 fumble recoveries (5 this year), and two for scores, and numerous blocked punts/xpts.

 

All these seniors need to know that they will be remembered for turning in another great season of NewCath football and they should be proud of all they have accomplished in the 4 years that they were apart of the program. Each one of these young men was a major contributor to this year’s team success. Just remember, there are countless players that would love to have achieved a small part of what you have; 2 State Titles, one State Runner-Up finish, and a 45-13 record.
