The Week In Review:

Raceland 62 Phelps 14

The Rams rested some players in this first round game. The result: Sophomore running back Carson Christian rushed for 117 yards on 8 carries. Team Leading Rusher Daylin Beach carried three times for two scores and 89 yards. Two Raceland players scored their first Varsity touchdowns - Trey Mills and Nathaniel Davidson. Third sting QB Matt Preston went 4 for 7 with 83 yards passing and two touchdowns. Phelps’ players played hard and broke loose for one touchdown against the Rams’ predominately starting defense.

Russell 49 Estill County 21

The Red Devils passed for their highest pass totals and had to hundred yard rushers Totaling over 400 yards of offense on their way to this first round win. Senior Bronson Korzep and Freshman Nick Conley both surpassed the one-hundred yard mark. Russell is peaking at the right time, but they will have their hands full in Round 2.

Ashland 49 Holmes 20

The Tomcats gave up an early score by Holmes after the Bulldogs came out in the Wildcat, with Jon Scruggs, pretty much continually. After the first score, Ashland adjusted and held Holmes in check while cruising to a blowout victory. Ashland’s talented sophomore running back, Quentin Baker, rushed for over one-hundred yards in just over one quarter of play. Ashland advances to Round 2.

Lawrence County 36 Maggoffin County 20

The Dawgs snapped a three game losing streak to end the regular season by getting a First round win over Maggofin County. Lawrence County will face Belfry in Round 2 after losing to the Pirates in the Regular season 35-12

Highlands 70 Boyd County 6

As predicted by most, the Lions were greatly outmatched by Highlands. Boyd County ends the season 1-10 after getting their only win versus Greenup County.

Garrard County 43 Lewis County 13

The Lions gave up seven turnovers that resulted in 29 Garrard County points. Hard to win a game this time of year giving up those kind of numbers, as Lewis County learned. The Lions finished the season 7-4, a good sign for a program with a history of struggling. Lewis County fans are surely looking forward to 2014.

The Week Ahead:

Raceland (9-2) vs. Paintsville (8-3)

The Rams and the Tigers played three weeks ago with Raceland winning 32-10. One would expect the result to be the same, but this time of season beating a team for the second time gets more difficult. The Tigers have improved greatly since 2012 and have come to like winning games. The Rams will have to come into this game focused and put it away early, or this could be a game.

Ashland (8-3) at Highlands (10-1)

Ashland started the season with one clear playmaker and a lot of questions. As the season went on, the Tomcats came into their own and answered many question by the mid point of the season. Last week Ashland won in Round 1 of the playoffs to earn the right to travel to Highlands, the defending State Champions. 2013 will go down as a good season for the Tomcats, but it will end in Round 2 of the playoffs.

Russell (7-4) at Bourbon County (11-0)

The Red Devils started the season in re-building mode without a clear cut playmaker. Senior Bronson Korzep was looked to be the cog that would make the machine go. Newcomer Freshman Nick Conley was a nice surprise for the Red Devils. Conley ended up being the second cog that made the machine go faster. Like Ashland, 2013 will be looked at as a good season for the Red Devils, but it will end in the second round of the playoffs.

Lawrence County (8-3) at Belfry (10-1)

The tell of two halves of a season for the Dawgs. The first seven games of the season saw Lawrence County go 7-0 scoring over 40 points in five of those games. In game eight, the Dawgs began a three game losing streak that cost them seeding in the District. Last week Lawrence County re-grouped and defeated Magoffin County in Round 1 of the playoffs. Round 2 sees a rematch with Belfry, one that the Dawgs lost in the regular season 12-35. Don’t expect a dramatic change the second time around.

Ram-ing The Predictions:

Raceland 35 Paintsville 14

Highlands 56 Ashland 21

Bourbon County 48 Russell 14

Belfry 35 Lawrence County 18

Giving you my predictions vs yours

Raceland 42 Paintsville 7

Highlands 49 Ashland 35

Bourbon Co 56 Russell 0

Belfry 42 Lawrence Co. 14

Understood, just had to cut it off somehow. The NEKY area is generally considered the FIVCO area which encompasses Greenup, Boyd, Carter, Lawrence, Elliot and we included Lewis County.
