All State Baseball Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 On a cold chilly November night saw the final regular season game of 2013 come to an end, while some teams had already clinched their spot in the playoffs and would be assured of an 11th game, other teams saw their season come to an end, however this night would see something more special and something these players would remember for the rest of their lives. This night seen the Hazard Bulldogs get their 600th win in school history. Hazard who came in at 8-1 and already clinched a playoff spot on November 8th, hosted the Sheldon Clark Cardinals at Daniel Field in Hazard. Sheldon Clark made the trip down to face the Bulldogs, hoping to upset the 8-1 Bulldogs for their first win on the season and to end their 12 game losing streak coming into the contest. Hazard would get on the scoreboard first and quickly as Brandon Jones would take it in from 44 yards out, Kevin Eversole would come on and make the extra point kick. Hazard’s defense was rock solid as they would keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard until the second half. Hazard would add two more scores in the first quarter to take a 21-0 lead going into the second quarter. Tanner Morgan would add another score to the Hazard lead on a 50 yard touchdown pass to Brandon Jones. Kevin Eversole would make the extra point kick and Hazard took a 28-0 lead. The Bulldogs wouldn’t stop there, as they would score two more times before going into halftime on a 40 yard touchdown pass from Tanner Morgan to Chris Hudson and a 5 yard touchdown run by Tanner Morgan. Hazard would take a 42-0 lead going into halftime. Sheldon Clark would get on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a 25 yard touchdown run by Brandon Butcher. Sheldon Clark would miss the extra point kick, making it 42-6 Hazard. Hazard would add one more score in the 4th quarter which came on a 46 yard touchdown pass from Cole Ratliff to Cade Fletcher. Kevin Eversole’s kick would be good and Hazard went up, to what would be the final score, 49-6. When the final horn sounded to end the game, the scoreboard showed the Hazard Bulldogs with the 49-6 victory but what it didn’t show, but everyone knew it, was this win was the Bulldogs 600th win in school history and 107th win since 2003. Freshmen quarterback Tanner Morgan was 4-for-4 through the air for 135 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. Hazard improves to 9-1 with the win (was originally 8-2 before Farivew’s forfeit). Hazard will host Lynn Camp on November 8th in the first round of the 2013 KHSAA State Class 1A Playoffs. Sheldon Clark fell to 0-9 with the loss and the Cardinals have to travel once again to Jackson to face the Breathitt County Bobcats in the KHSAA State Class 3A Playoffs. Not only was this Hazard’s 600th win in school history but this was also Coach Dixon’s 107th win since he’s been at Hazard. Coach Dixon started at Hazard back in 2003 and has since piled up a 107-33 record with 8 district championships (7 straight district championships) and he’s took Hazard to the playoffs each year he’s been at Hazard and even has a state championship to show for it, although he has only won the state title once and he’s been there three times. Two of those state championship games have been against Mayfield. The other state championship game was against Beechwood. Going into the first round playoff game against Lynn Camp, freshmen quarterback Tanner Morgan has completed 113-of-167 passes for 1,877 yards and 22 touchdowns. Tanner is averaging 188 passing yards per game. Also leading the Hazard offense is junior running back Brandon Jones who has carried the ball 128 times for 1,638 yards and 16 touchdowns. Brandon is averaging 182 rushing yards per game. Even tho upsets do happen, I don’t think anyone can stop Hazard until at least the semi-finals where they will more than likely hookup with Williamsburg who is having a stellar year. Could this be the year that Hazard gets back to the state title game or will Williamsburg or someone else be making the trip? Regardless of any outcome that happens in the playoffs, the Hazard Bulldog players, coaches and fans will always remember this night as their 600th win in school history.
