Week 9 Recap

The Tigers varsity team completed district play with a 56-0 victory over the Ludlow Panthers. It was a dominating performance by the Tigers that ran their district record to 3-0. Coach Rash remains undefeated in district play as a head coach, with his district record now at 34-0. Seven different Tigers scored touchdowns in the game with QB Kyle Fieger throwing three TD passes to three different receivers.

The JV finished their season with a victory over the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds, final score 14-0. It was a typical Beechwood Newport Central Catholic battle with two well coached teams and solid players battling it out. This victory completed a very good season for the JV, running their record to 6-2. Here are the final results for their season:

Simon Kenton 37 Beechwood 20

Beechwood 21 Dixie Heights 6

Beechwood 26 Ryle 20

Beechwood 24 Campbell County 6

Covington Catholic 22 Beechwood 15

Beechwood 27 Cooper 0

Beechwood 14 Newport Central Catholic 0

The freshman team also completed their season last week. It was not a happy ending to the year as the Tigers took one on the chin from Boone County, losing 36-14. That closed the Tigers record out at 3-6. Here are the final results on their season:

The Week Ahead

With the freshman and JV seasons over, it is time to focus on varsity and the playoffs. Beechwood will finish the regular season as they usually do, facing long time rival Newport Central Catholic. The game will be played at Beechwood on Saturday at high noon. The Breds enter this game with a record of 5-4 and a winning regular season hanging in the balance. Like Beechwood, NCC has played a demanding out of district schedule and completed a sweep of their district opponents.

One thing about this series is it is always a competitive game. Even in the games where the final score was a couple TD spread, they were closely contested battles for most of the game. There is a good summary in the game thread that has the scores of all the games since 2000. Here is the link:

Since 2000, these two programs have combined for 7 state titles and 6 state runner-ups. To further emphasize how close these two programs are and how hard fought the regular season game is, in 5 of those state championship seasons the team that lost the regular season game won the state championship. Last year was the first time since 2000 that NCC beat Beechwood in the regular season and won the state championship.

This game will have a different look than last year though. Both teams graduated a number of key players, especially in the line. As a result, both teams have been a season long work in progress putting together line play capable of taking each of them to another state title. That battle in the trenches will be one of the more interesting matchups to watch on Saturday, and will very likely determine who wins this game.

The other battle to watch will be the QB battle between two first year QB's. Both NCC's Mac Franzen and Beechwood's Kyle Fieger have had very good years and the passing game will be a huge factor in the outcome. It should be another exciting battle on Saturday afternoon at Beechwood.
