Voice of Reason
Beechwood Tiger Insider - Week Seven Week Six Recap The Tigers hosted one of their biggest rivals last week when the Covington Catholic Colonels came to Ft. Mitchell. There was a big crowd on hand for a Thursday night televised game. It was a promising start for the Tigers as they took the opening kickoff and moved downfield rather easily. They stalled at the Cov Cath 25 but then the Colonels fumbled on their first play. The Tigers then moved to first and goal but a fumble of a center snap turned the ball back over to the Colonels at the one yard line. Despite controlling most of the 1st quarter the Tigers had nothing to show for it. And from that point on, Cov Cath took charge of the game. The Tigers could not stop the Colonels on 3rd down most of the night. Once again the Tigers struggled against a team with a big line that ran the ball. Add in 3 more turnovers and it was the 4th quarter before the Tigers could get their passing game rolling. By then, it was too little, too late and Cov Cath left town with a 28-7 win. Soph. QB Kyle Fieger did go over the 1,000 yard passing mark in the game so congratulations to Kyle. The JV traveled a couple miles north on Dixie Highway on Saturday morning to try and get even with Covington Catholic. It looked like they were going to make that happen, leading most of the game. However, the Colonels came from behind and got a 4th quarter touchdown to get the win over Beechwood by a score of 22-15. This was only the second loss of the season for the JV and dropped their record to 4-2. The good news on the week was the freshman team got back on the winning side of things with a win over Cooper. It was a close hard fought contest. Beechwood took a 12-6 lead in the 4th quarter but Cooper had one last chance for the tieing score. Cole Hicks intercepted a pass and returned it for a pick 6 to get the Tigers the win. Final score 18-6. The Week Ahead District play opens this week. Beechwood goes on the road for their district opener and will face their toughest challenger in the district, the Bellevue Tigers. This will be a Tiger battle like none we have seen before. Both teams have been traditionally running game oriented offenses, but ironically in the same year both teams have become pass first teams. Beechwood's QB Kyle Fieger is having a good season but Bellevue's Tyler Ackerson has been spectacular. In last week's loss to Holmes, Ackerson accounted for over 500 yards of offense by himself with 400+ of that through the air. Ackerson has not faced a defense as good as Beechwood's yet so he will be out to prove that he can put up big numbers against anyone. Bellevue also has their veteran running back Dylan Huff back so it isn't a pass only attack on the Bellevue side. For the Tigers JV and freshmen, they will get the opportunity to visit one of their preseason scrimmage opponents this week - the Conner Cougars. The freshmen host the Cougars on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm and look to build on last week's win over Conner's district rival Cooper. The JV will be visiting Conner's Hebron home on Saturday morning at 10:00 am. The Burns Show For anyone familiar with Beechwood and Ft. Mitchell, the Burns name is well known. It seems like there is always a Burns on the Beechwood roster. This year there are three Burns - and none of them are brothers. In the loss to Covington Catholic, the Burns cousins provided the Beechwood highlights. Senior WR Carter Burns got Beechwood's only touchdown in the game when he caught a 4th down pass from Kyle Fieger. Carter has continued to work hard through some disappointment this year to get his playing time so it was a good moment for Beechwood fans to see Carter making a key play in a big game. Younger cousin Jeremy Burns provided the highlight reel play of the game on a reception late in the game. Jeremy took a bubble pass and then the show began. Jeremy cut left, right, forward, back and turned the jets on and off multiple times in a run that went sideline to sideline through most of the Cov Cath defense before one last Colonel finally was able to corral Jeremy along the far sideline and prevent what looked like it might become an incredible TD run. It is one of those highlight reel plays that you have to see to truly appreciate it. The last of the varsity Burns cousins is Logan Burns, a junior RB. Logan is playing football this year for the first time in a Beechwood uniform. The Burns family bleeds Beechwood red and there are more of the Burns cousins in the pipeline, so plan on seeing the Burns name on the back of a Beechwood uniform for years to come. tigers82
Another nice Write-up EOT. It's a shame the Varsity game didn't end better. FYI regarding the Burns'... Logan's brother Riley is a Freshman Lineman. So when the Freshman Season ends, there will be 4 Burns cousins on the same Varsity sideline.
