Mayfield Cardinals Football Week #6

As week #6 rolls around, the 5-0 Mayfield Cardinals find themselves still atop the BGP polls as they prepare to play 6A Marshall County. The run to 5-0 is a feat that even diehard Cardinal fans would find pleasantly surprising this year. The wins were all against larger class schools and 4 of the 5 were ranked. Mayfield has now been ranked #1 in class A for all of 2012 and 2013 and much of the 2011 season. The Cardinals have now won 19 straight, second in the state only to another Western Kentucky squad, the Bowling Green Purples. The Cardinals have also won 35 straight at home dating back to a 35-7 loss to Caldwell County in 2008.

The Cardinals latest 49-21 victory Saturday night over previously undefeated #7 (5A) Graves County was a head turner. The win was the Cards fifth straight in the series with their much larger cross town neighbors, Mayfield now leads the series 16-5 all time.

The Cardinals now only have to play a 6A, Marshall County squad to complete the non district portion of the early season, a game the Cardinals will be heavy favorites in and a game that will find Mayfield in a unfamiliar position as guest at the Marshall County Home Coming, something I can not ever recall the Cardinals being a guest for.

With this weeks game at Marshall County and the next 2 weeks being against Fulton City and Fulton County, the Cards will have what most feel is a 3 week breather before going back into the lions den to face #2 ranked Russellville and end the regular season at 2A #1 Caldwell County. The breather in the schedule could not come at a better time for the Cardinals to heal up. The Cardinals have been able to avoid anything major so far but they still have lineman Kyle Downing out for a few weeks with a thumb injury and receiver Dylan Reed has a wrist injury. Both should be back in time for the Russellville game.

On the all time national wins chase, the Cardinals are in 6th place with a career record of 810-249-32 and are rapidly closing the gap on #5 Mount Carmel, PA (815-301-57). Mt. Carmel is 2-2 so far this season. Mayfield has been steadily climbing up the list recently in large part to having gone 61-4 in their last 65 games dating back to the start of the 2009 season. If the Cards keep winning and Mr. Carmel continues to go .500, the Cards have a chance to take over or tie for the #5 spot by seasons end.

UPDATE

Mt. Carmel, PA. lost last night and with Mayfield winning the Cardinals are now only 4 wins behind Mt. Carmel in the quest to takeover the #5 spot in all time wins
