It was a fairly disappointing day for the Tomcats. I don’t have a lot of stats because I don’t look at the score book. I’ll try to get better results latter. Here are some of the points I do remember. I should also have some photos to post later.

 

The bad news:

 

• Our 130, Trace Stafford, was injured. His elbow was dislocated, with the bone coming completely out of the socket. It was a very painful looking sight to see. He was taken to the local hospital where they reset it. Trace is a good kid and has worked hard at this sport for a long time. He is a senior and I hate to see his career end this way.

 

• One of our 160’s was disqualified for bad sportsmanship – he’ll have to miss the regional tournament and is therefore done for the season. I hope that he’ll learn to keep a cooler head.

 

• Our 171, Cody Zacur, had to set out – he is recovering from an illness. He should be good to go by regional tournament time.

 

 

The bright spots:

 

• Senior, Joe Serey, 145, came in 2nd place, loosing in the championship match 2-0.

 

• Junior, Chris Bayless, heavy weight, came in 2nd place. Chris is a first year wrestler. He is really a 215, but we needed a heavy weight. We really need to get this guy on the football team.

 

• Freshman, Evan Holbrook, 189, managed to get 4th place in a weight class dominated by upper classmen.

 

• Junior, Andrew Dillion, placed 4th in the 215 pound weight class.

 

• I think we had some other young wrestlers place in the lighter weight classes – I’ll try to find our more about that.

Serey, a senior, placed 2nd in yesterday's McDonalds Classic.

Bayless, a junior, placed 2nd as a heavy weight. He weighs 215, but we need a heavy weight - and he didn't mind the challenge.

Trace’s opponent is Hosman of Bourbon Co. This is the match where Trace’s elbow was dislocated. This will probably be the last match of his high school career, because there isn’t enough time to heal before the regional tournament next weekend.

 

I will always remember Trace for his hard work and enthusiasm. Thanks for the memories Trace.

After last weeked at JC who do you believe will be top 4 in each weight going to state in reg 8?The reg is tougher than last year ,at least to get to state.

I agree that Region 8 is tougher this year. Everybody wasn’t at Johnson Central this past weekend. Two notable teams, Sheldon Clark and Wayne Co. were missing. They are both very good teams and could have contenders in every weight class. It’s too close for me to call. Every school seems to have some good wrestlers.

 

I will say that Johnson Central has improved a lot since I saw them at the beginning of the year at Fairland. McCreary Central also has some good wrestlers.

 

Ashland is decimated by injuries, illness, disqualifications, etc. But, we should still have few that will qualify for state.
