The George Rogers Clark softball team kept hopes alive for a top seed in the 40th District with a 4-1 triumph over Montgomery County Thursday afternoon at Cardinal Heights.

The Lady Cardinals (11-8) improved their record to 3-1 against district foes and will take on Bourbon County in a key district contest Tuesday in Paris. The Lady Colonels, 14-5 and 4-0, swept the Lady Indians and defeated Clark 5-4 on April 16 at Cardinal Heights. Montgomery County fell to 10-6 and 2-3 in the district.

Clark crossed the plate with a run in the second inning when pinch runner Abbi Puckett scored on a wild pitch by Montgomery County pitcher Kelley Oaks. Clark pitcher Whitney Conkwright opened the inning with an infield single. Clark, which stranded 14 runners, left the bases loaded to end the second frame.

The Lady Cards added to the lead with a three-run outburst in the fourth inning. Clark catcher Erin Carrus highlighted the inning with a one-out double that plated two runs. Carrus, who sparked the hosts’ offense with three hits, including a pair of doubles, made a nifty catch behind the plate in the top of the fourth with runners at second and third and one out. The grab by Carrus prevented Montgomery from a possible breakthrough inning after Kourtney Parker led off the fourth frame with a double and Lilly Setters reached on an infield single with one out.

Montgomery prevented the shutout with a run in the sixth. Megan Arrasmith crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by teammate Staci Woodard.

Conkwright went the distance for Clark and finished with six strikeouts, while walking just three. Conkwright, who also connected on three singles, hit a batter in the third inning and allowed just five runners past second base.

Madison Norton added a pair of hits, while Kolbi Mitchell, Sydney Anderson and Peyton Skillern each added a hit for Clark.

Cheyenne Shepherd paced the Lady Indians’ offense with a triple and a single.
