The George Rogers Clark baseball team suffered its first district loss of the season with a 1-0 setback at Montgomery County Monday.

The loss snapped the Cardinals’ five-game winning streak, while the Indians notched their sixth consecutive win in their district opener. Clark opened the district schedule with wins at Paris and Bourbon County last week.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first six innings. Montgomery (10-3) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on Clay Barton’s RBI single that scored Jordan Nester, who opened the inning with a single.

The Cards (8-7) collected two hits off Indians starter Ben Gulley in the second and fourth innings but failed to muster a run after advancing runners to third in each of the two innings. Clark stranded 10 base runners, compared to four by the Indians.

Gulley went the distance for the hosts and finished with seven strikeouts and issued four walks. Gulley, who scattered six hits and fanned the side to open the game in the first inning. Clark leadoff hitter Scotty Turner paced Clark’s offense with a pair of singles, while Zack Roe, Christian Cooke, Jordan Williams and Malik Warner collected one hit apiece.

Clark starting pitcher Derek McKenzie went six innings and scattered four hits, one of which was a two-out double by Chase Newkirk in the first frame. McKenzie fanned one batter and walked three before giving way to Brent Stoneking after giving up a single to Nester to open the seventh inning.

Barton led the Indians with a pair of singles.
