Newport Central Catholic 8 Beechwood 5 (10 innings) Walk-off GS

Featured Replies

In the season finale for both teams it comes down to one swing of the bat to end in "GRAND" fashion, as NewCath Sr. Mehgan Millard hits a two out, 1-2 pitch for a walk-off GRANDSLAM as the Breds defeat Beechwood.

This game started out like it was going to be a repeat performance from Fr. pitcher Sarah Neace, who the day before recorded her 1st career NO-HITTER. Neace goes 5 1/3 innings without a hit, the 1st 3 innings she had 8 K's, and 10 through 5. Beechwood did get runners on base during that time frame on 2 walks and the only two Breds errors. The Breds on the other hand could only muster up 4 runs during the 1st 5 innings, but that lead was not going to be safe. The Beechwood 6th starts off with a groundout to 1st, then a walk to Barry, Kremer is hit by a pitch, then Wheat connects for the 1st hit of the game for the Tigers and also ends the shutout. Before the inning is over the Tigers will plate two more on two more hits and a walk. Beechwood ties the score in the 7th. After Neace walks the 1st batter she is replaced by Taylor Burkart who is greeted by a single off the bat of Ruedebush, after an out on a fielder choice at 2nd, Kremer sends one to left for the tying sac-fly.

Both teams put up "goose eggs" in the 8th & 9th and it's on to International tie-breaker and a "wild" 10 inning. Beechwood's Kremer is placed at 2nd and she is moved over on the sac-bunt by Wheat. Berger follows with an RBI single, Carr follows with a single past the diving Michaela Ware at short, but Schneider K's. The next batter Whitfield hits one to 2nd that takes a "funny" hop, but Millard is able to get it in her hand as the runner from 1st is passing and they make contact with one another, 3rd out.....WRONG, the umpire says he didn't see contact so the "sacks are juiced". Up steps the Tigers leadoff hitter Houck who hits a "screamer" that Ware backhands and fires to get the force at 2nd to end the inning, but the Tigers have the 5-4 lead.

The NewCath 10th is just has chaotic, as Schreiber is placed at 2nd Burkart puts the sac-bunt down, but instead of going to 1st Beechwood trys to get the runner at 3rd to no avail. After a Hannah Jones pop out, Sr. Kelsey Feeback drops a bunt and Schreiber "baits" them into no throw and all hands are safe. Fr. Loren Zimmerman steps to the plate and hits one to Houck at short who "fires" home and gets Schreiber on a VERY close play at the plate. Up steps Mehgan Millard, with what Marty Brennaman would say is "the Frisch's Big Boy big play of the game", as she gets "all" of a 1-2 pitch and sends deep down the rightfield line for walk-off Grannie.

For NewCath Millard 2-6, 4RBI, HR. Ware 3-5, Feeback 3-5.

For Beechwood Berger 2-5 2RBI

Congrats to New Cath, sounds like the Louisville win tonight,

There is a real good chance Beechwood will make the region tourney, even though they are in a weak district and the district is down this year the thought of them making the regions just a year or two ago was unthinkable.
