  1. What is your definition of small schools? Since Beechwood, St. Henry and New Cath all play in the All A Classic I would consider them small schools. I think Ludlow will be very good but will have to get by these three schools to win the 9th Region All A. Didn't Ludlow lose 4 seniors to graduation? Do they have a very good sophomore or junior class coming in?

I was thinking the DIII schools.

However, I would bet a meal and a beverage from the Ludlow Yacht Club that Ludlow beats a DII school this year.

  2. They're the team to beat in NKY small schools.

    Great young players.

Coach Hart is doing a great job in Ludlow.

The only question is whether or not any of the small schools can keep it close.

It's tough to say how they will do against the bigger schools though. I don't think they have the fire power to hang with Dixie but on any given night you never know.

  3. I agree with Faust and Brannen towards the top of the list. I also believe Booher to be at the top as well probably at the very top.

I don't think he's getting as much love from other posters just because he hasn't been around as long as other coaches. (In NKY).

However, his resume may be the best in NKY.

I think one coach that doesn't get enough credit is Tom Dilts at Dayton, while he doesn't have regional titles or district titles on his resume his team always plays tough and seem to play well every year. Add to that many of the issues he may have to deal with in addition to coaching.

  4. From NKY.com:

Villa Madonna 50, Dixie Heights 43

    Villa Madonna - Stoll 4 3 13, Miller 2 4 8, Hengge 0 1 1, N. Hennard 1 0 2, A. Hennard 2 1 7, Dumaine 5 2 16, Case 1 1 3. Totals: 14 12 50.

    Dixie (12-15) - Margolen 1 0 2, Eiben 6 2 15, Sparkman 0 2 2, Strong 3 7 13, Hartfiel 0 1 1, Elkus 3 4 10. Totals: 13 16 43.

    [chart]

    |Villa Madonna|8|13|20|10| -50|

    |Dixie|14|8|7|14| -43|

    [end chart]

    3-pointers: V 8 (Stoll 2, A. Hennard 2, Dumaine 4); D 1 (Eiben).

Note: Villa Madonna advances to play St. Henry Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Dixie Heights.

Villa moves onto the district finals and into the regionals for the second year in a row.

  5. It seems the Beechwood may have its way agian with the NKY DIII schools. After that it seems like a pretty big battle for 2nd place.

Who seems the most likely to knock off Beechwood the 2nd time around?

Who seems the most likely to be the one awarded the 2nd place ribbon and handshake?

After watching box scores, I would probably have to say Ludlow for 2nd place and I don't know if anyone can knock off BW.

  6. Chevalier and Hicks were up to their normal banter with the refs last week at the Dixie/Conner game. Hicks won the complaining battle with some of his "over-the-top" tantrums.

    QUOTE]

There was a good picture of Hicks in the paper (or at least online) sometime during the Dixie/Connor game.

I don't think he's as bad as some coaches, but it was a great picture.

  7. Shenanigans? Please explain.

    Congrats to the Blue Lightning.

My only guess on shenanigans would be leaving Cook so open. They looked to double team (and sometimes triple team) some of Villa's leading ladies. Leaving Cook wide open. She took advantage and had one of the best games of her career.

Ludlow also looked to slow down the game as well.

Only a guess at the shenanigians.

Once again congrats and good luck Friday to the blue lightning.

  8. Beechwood 68, Villa Madonna 47

    Villa Madonna - Lamping 1 0 2, McLean 0 1 1, Bryan 7 7 21, Schuh 3 0 9, Luensman 0 1 1, Phelps 7 0 15. Totals: 18 9 47.

    Beechwood (15-10) - Nussbaum 6 3 15, Hall 7 0 18, Pohlgeers 8 5 21, Cruse 2 0 4, Fangman 1 0 2, Daniels 2 0 4, Maus 1 2 4. Totals: 27 10 68.

    Villa Madonna 7 19 9 12 -47

    Beechwood 14 19 19 16 -68

    3-pointers: V 2 (Schuh, Phelps); B 4 (Hall 4).

  9. I really don't think so. He has done a good job with that Dayton team this year but when talking about the top coaches in the region I don't quite think he is in that company. Not sure when he took over but Dayton hasn't exactly been tearing it up the past few years. 15-11, 11-16, 10-17, and 4-21 in the last 4 seasons. (I can't remember if Dilts was there for the 4-21 season)

Dayton has a talented team of seniors this year but not quite ready to crown Dilts as a top coach in NKY. Please don't think I am taking away from what that team or he has accomplished but when talking about the top just don't see it.

I see your point RC and VOR, but over the past 4 or 5 years most of these seniors have been playing varsity or JV basketball as freshmen or 8th graders and taken their lumps. They aren't going to rack up wins doing that. Dilts has taken these players and developed them and fit them into his system.

Isn't that a sign of a good coach, developing talent and molding them to be successful?

Dilts has to deal with a lot of off the court issues that Coach Henley has to deal with as well.

While Dayton is not going to win the state tournament this year or the All A tourney. He's done a heck of a job with the hand that he's dealt and I'll still argue that he deserves to be in the top 10 of area coaches.
