  1. That's really not true, now is it. Barrett has only been there 4 years, Melinda Turner took over this year and Paul Green use to be AD and left to go to Lee Co.

Owsley Co at there usuall denial at best.

You are obviously confused!!! Barrett has been in an administrative position for 8+ years, Paul Green was never the AD, and Turner just became Supt. in October of 2007.

  2. I know for a fact that the Congleton kid was not released by the officials at Owsley. A hearing was to be scheduled and the parents chose to relocate him to Breathitt instead of a hearing. I do not know what happened to his eligablity at Breathitt. I have also been involved in players transferring away and we released the student to play the next year. So I have personally seen both ways of a transfer being handled.

You may think you know for a fact--but your choice of words are not correct. There is no such action as "releasing a kid".You simply place a check mark in the column designated yes or no before the appropriate reason for transfer. When all the truthful answers to the reasons for transfer are "NO"--a student is not going to be declared eligible for the KHSAA. Please view a transfer form on the KHSAA website and you will be much better informed.

  3. I agree. Also look at the others who have transferred in. I don't blame Owsley for fighting for thier transfers but remeber it goes both ways. I was hoping the Noble kid would get eligable, because his transfer is for family reasons and he should have been allowed by Breathitt to play. Remember it is the kids who lose a year of high school ball and they can't get it back. Adults should think of the kids in these matters and forget thier personal agendas.

It appears to me that the Owsley school officials are not going to provide misinformation to the KHSAA, regardless of the situation. They did not provide false information regarding any of the transfers to Owsley or from Owsley. Therefore, they have an inelgible player--just like Breathitt does.

I agree--the kids are the ones that suffer--and that is a shame.

  4. Schools do have the option as to whether to oppose a transfer or not. They can fill out a form in opposition and then a hearing is scheduled to determine eligability. Most schools don't oppose for the kids sake but some do. This year Owsley chose to oppose the Congleton kids transfer first to Lee Co.(the county in which he did reside and had for most of his life) then when he went to Breathitt.

You obviously do not have an indepth knowledge of KHSAA Bylaws. You should go online ---it's there for all to read.

  5. His parents still live in wolfe county but his grandmother which resides in Owsley County got custody of him. that was the ultimate ruling for him. His grandmother had to get custody of him before he was allowed to play.

You are exactly right. And custody had to change prior to the start of the school year. This transfer was totally legitimate!!

  6. I agree. The Owls have just been unlucky in finding a coach that is willing to stay either for personal or professional reasons. Dating back to the 2002 season all Owls coaches except maybe one have left due to more personal than administration related reasons. Hopefully that has changed with the hire in Coach Noble.

The Lady Owls have not been involved or been victims of this. Coach Bates has been successful since Coach Paul Green left in 2005 to take a higher ranked administration job in Lee County. Coach Green was successful and coached at Owsley since the late 90's so it has been 10+ years and the girls just went through two coaches. The Lady Owls will bounce back quick and reload and refresh throughout this season and the next seasons to come.

IMO the Lady Owls will have to look out of the county to find their next head coach unless one of the assistants on the bench are starting to enjoy the sideline a little more or missing it;). The Lady Owls should find some takers because there are a nice bunch of young and more experienced than most middle school level players that should help any coach's choice in coming and staying around for the next 5 years.

  7. 1. Powell County 3-0

    2. Lee County 1-1

    3. Owsley County 2-3

    4. Estill County 1-3

Powell has 2 games remaining with Lee and one at Estill

Lee has 2 games remaining with Powell, one with Owsley and one with Estill

    Owsley one at Lee

Estill one at Lee and one with Powell

    District Tournament at Powell County

The Lee record could not be correct if they have 2 games left--Owsley beat them for the 1 loss that you have-- so what were the results of the other games-each team should have 6 games total?????

  8. I had a chance to talk to Wallace, he stated that he was willing to stay on and finish out the season but, after resigning as teacher he was told he wasn't needed as coach.

I really think that you have received incorrect information. There seems to be a lot of that out there. It seems that lots of people knew that the Lady Owls would be loosing a coach several weeks ago--

  9. Who are candidates to replace him?

I hear that Assistant Coach Cornett and Assistant Coach Mason will continue to coach the Lady Owls. A familiar face to Owsley County Basketball, Charlie Turner, was on the bench with the Coaching Staff at Powell County tonight. I am sure the Owsley faithful remembers January 2005, when Coach Turner and then Lady Owls Coach Paul Green appeared on the bench in Stanton for their first game as the interim Boy's Coaches when the Owls lost their Coach, unexpectedly. How ironic????

  10. Good Luck to the Lady Owls amidst the changes that they are currently experiencing. Powell defeated Owsley in Booneville on December 14 by 34 points, 67-33 at a time when the Lady Pirates were without the play of Jones--their star guard, who was out with an injury. Jones:was back at full speed tonight in Stanton, as the Lady Owls were defeated by 21 points. The Lady Owls got several potentially easy shots under the basket that would just not fall for them -- if the Lady Owls play as one--like they did tonight--the offense will come and their season will end with some great memories--which these group of fine young ladies deserve!! Stay focused and be tough!:thumb:

  11. That win vs Louisville Shawnee is a very important game to Powell Co's opponents. Truly a red letter date in the history of Powell Co. And I doubt that Shawnee needed much help the following year 'on the road'.

My whole point is that just maybe Powell Co can be proven to be the most 'home-biased' court in all of KY basketball history....and still. If such a thing were to ever be investigated, this is where it would start....

And I do understand that it isn't the kids pulling this stuff.

I do not think this could be proven. I can recall numerous tournaments at Powell County in years past--where Powell was playing and they did not win the tournament or even get past the first game--so you need to look south of Stanton to find some more "home-biased" courts that could perhaps satisfy the criteria that you have established.

  12. You obviously haven't been to Pulaski since the early 90s then. The Maroons do not get "homer" calls as others get. Especially over the last 3 years. Just ask anyone who played them in the region & I'm sure they will tell you Pulaski does not get a favorable whistle anywhere. Not saying refs had a vendetta or anything, but there is PLENTY of game tape @ the high school that will make you shake your head.

It is very true--I have not been and probably will never be. No reflection on anyone--just not a trip teams from our area will ever make again. Not fun to drive several hours to get beat regardless of the talent levels. Sounds like you feel that way also.

  13. Powell won the 14th Regional Tourney about 3 years ago on their home court. They defeated Breathitt County in an early round by shooting about 47 freethrows (vs Breathitt shooting about 15). Eventually defeated every other team in the tourney in a similar way.

How many free throws did Breathitt shoot in some of their Regional Tourney wins of the past?

  14. If this post and the posts following it are true, then any officials, administrators, or whoever may be involved in some sort of old boy network at Powell should be ashamed. 35-5 from the foul line isn't even trying to make it look good, it's just, well, I'm sure most on here know what it is.

The day of Homer referees ended about 20 years ago in most of the state, which means Powell should be catching up in another decade or so. :sssh:

You evidently haven't witnessed any Regional Tournaments in Hazard---at least a few years ago when the eventual Regional Champion had one player awarded 25+ free throws.
