  1. Only 3 all A schools make it to the tourney, seems strange for the 14th. And only one goes in as a district champion.

I don't understand why you think it is strange for "only 3" all A schools to make it to the Region--Sounds like you think schools with less than 250 students in grades 9-12 should have a better team that schools with 600+ enrollment. Wish that was true--but only in "Elite Situations" will that occur--i.e, having several GREAT transfers that are ruled eligible.

I'm proud of the way Doug Noble has improved the Owls as the season has progressed, too.

Owsley became more competitive every game. For instance, Wolfe had beaten Owsley by around 10 twice in invitational tournaments this season, but were lucky to survive the Owls in Campton two weeks ago. The Owls led nearly the entire game, before losing by 2. The Owls trailed Letcher Central by just 3 points with a few minutes left in the game at Whitesburg before having to resort to fouls and lost by 13. And they played Powell to the wire in Stanton not long ago after losing big to the Pirates at home earlier. They did hit a bump in the road at Buckhorn last weekend, but came back in the district to give the Engineers all they wanted, the same Estill team that had beated the Owls by over 20 points twice this season.

So, congratulations to Coach Noble, his staff, and players. This was his first season as a varsity coach, after years as a middle school coach, and he has shown me he has all the ingredients to be a great coach for the Owls. I'm glad we have him.:thumb:

  3. Great game. Owsley led for much of the game and was up by 9 at one time, then Estill game back and went in front by 8. Owsley came back to tie it at 62. Estill held the ball till 10 seconds left on the clock, and Cacklin hit a 3 as the horn sounded. Tough loss for the Owls....they played a heck of a game, maybe their best of the year.:thumb:

For a moment I thought the Owls had pulled another big tournament upset, like last year, but it wasn't to be.

Congratulations to both teams for a hard played and exciting game.

Shaft, you sound like a man close to the situation at Bath. So let me ask you this, why did he sit out a game if not already mandated by the KHSAA? Or was it sent down that he'd be suspended for one game over the comments? You seem to be in the know. I would assume by your posts that he knew it was coming and wanted to get it over with. I highly doubt Mr. Coach Hicks would just sit out a game because he thought it would be the prudent thing to do. That would be against his character, IMO.
  5. Listened to this one on the radio. Josh Reed led Owsley with 30pts Preson Wilso led the Wolves with 20. Owsley blew a 10 point 4th quarter lead, Wolfe missed to many free throws to count down the stretch giving Owsley every chance to pull away, but they never did. Great game to listen to I'm sure it was a fun one to watch. Whoever calls the game over in Campton does a tremendous job.

Side note....Owsley had 3 players foul out I believe.

Yes--3+, as Owsley had 16 fouls called on them the second half as opposed to 5 for the Wolves. Also, I hear there was a problem with the clock--seem to be sticking several times???Ha!

  6. Sounds like Perry finally hit some shots. The last couple of games they have been ice cold from the 3 pt line, something like 2-40 or something, it has been awful shooting for them. Teams are thinking they are holding the ball, but they aren't, they just can't score. This game may get them out of the slump they were in, I guess only time will tell. They play Knott Central on Thursday, if they don't play well, it could be back to the losing column in this one.

Sounds familiar for the Owls. Every team they play has a great night from every angle--This game sounds comparable to the Knott vs Powell game and a final score that is not indicative of the team's capability. I am sure Powell and Owsley will get it together in the near future--Watch out for some teams that look like the 80's and 90's for Owsley and Powell, too.

  7. This is not a quality win unless you consider any win a quality one but I know that is not what you meant. The Eagles of Leslie County now have a record of 3-13. The Owls are now 4-12.

When you are having a difficult year, as the Owls and Eagles both are, it is always good to get a win. It all depends on what you are comparing things. Compared to Hazard and JBS quality maybe not--but if you compare Leslie to Owsley--then a win is a win.:dancingpa Good Luck to the Owls and the Eagles during the month of February and district tournament play. They both have great leaders---Noble and Sizemore are class acts!!
